How to Write a Powerful Personal Statement

Matt Ellis

A personal statement is a short essay that highlights the best qualities of the writer, usually in the context of school or job applications. Somewhat autobiographical, personal essays delve into the talents, skills, passions, ambitions, and accomplishments of the writer.

Something to know when applying to schools, scholarships, or companies for a job is that the institution wants to know what kind of person their candidate is. Personal statements enable the evaluation of applicants, not just of what they say about themselves, but also of how they say it.

That makes writing personal statements a useful skill for getting accepted at your top school or dream job. Unfortunately, writing about yourself isn’t always easy—it’s quite a personal topic! So in this guide, we explain everything you need to know about how to write a personal statement, including some personal statement examples.

What is a personal statement?

As mentioned above, a personal statement is a resource used to evaluate candidates, especially for school applications, employment, scholarships, and some types of grants. It typically explains a candidate’s relationship with the relevant field, such as an academic discipline or job position.

Take a look at this personal statement example from Uni Compare . Notice how the writer, a prospective law student, discloses their passion for and understanding of legal matters, while also mentioning their relevant experience and achievements.

In another personal statement example from a would-be English literature student , the writer links their favorite books to their interest in the subject, even sharing personal stories of watching famous plays live at a theater, before listing off their academic accomplishments.

There are no set rules for how to write a personal statement—a lot of your writing choices depend on the assignment and reader—but they typically fall between 400 and 1,000 words, rarely exceeding a single page.

Personal statements can be either open or prompted. Open personal statements are when you, the writer, get to choose the main topic. These are often more difficult because it requires astute decision-making: How do you choose which parts of your life to write about?

Prompted personal statements narrow down the focus. This format usually offers a specific question as a prompt, or at least sets some guidelines for what you should cover.

How to write a personal statement

When writing a personal statement, follow the normal guidelines to essay writing ; after all, a personal statement is often just a short specialized personal essay.

As with all serious writing, we recommend the six-step writing process . First and foremost, you need to understand the assignment, in particular the necessary topic(s) and target word count. Once you’re sure you know what you need to do, it’s time to begin.

1 Brainstorming

The brainstorming phase is when you come up with the different ideas to mention in your personal statement or decide what the main topic will be if the prompt is open.

For example, if the assignment asks you to write about a significant life event that influenced who you are, you could start by writing down all your most influential life events so that you could pick your subject from the list. The best choice is not always obvious: In this personal statement example, a student uses a conversation with their grandmother to transition into their interest in economics.

If you already know the most significant life event, you could then brainstorm the different ways it impacted you. Later, you can choose the best ones from the list to include in your personal statement.

What if you don’t know what to include in your personal statement? Here are some introspective questions to ask yourself to help you find personal topics to write about:

Sometimes it’s hard to accurately reflect on yourself, so feel free to ask friends or loved ones for advice. Find out what talents and skills they admire most about you. What would they say are your best traits?

Once you have enough ideas to satisfy the requirements of the assignment and meet the word count, you can get started on outlining in the next step.

2 Preparing

The preparation, or outlining , phase is when you take all your ideas from brainstorming and organize them into a basic framework for your first draft.

Before you start structuring everything, however, ask yourself whom you’re writing for. Your reader determines not just your tone, but also what you choose to talk about in your personal statement (and what you choose to omit).

For example, if you’re writing a personal statement for a college application, the school’s admissions officers will probably be interested in your academic achievements, such as landing on the honor roll. However, if you’re writing a personal statement for a job application, academic achievements like the honor roll might not be worth mentioning.

Try to glean what your reader wants to know before you begin formulating your personal statement. University recruiters want to know if you match their school or program, so include facts about yourself that demonstrate you’re a good fit. Job recruiters want evidence that you’ll do the job well, so include proof of your work ethic and skill mastery.

With your specific reader in mind, reread your list of ideas from brainstorming. Choose which ones to keep and which ones to leave out.

From there, organize your ideas into the three sections of your personal statement: introduction, body, and conclusion. In this stage, you don’t need to worry about the details just yet. For now, just make sure all the required ideas are included and sequenced in the right order.

3 Drafting

When first learning how to write a personal statement, remember that the drafting phase is usually the longest and most involved—it’s the part of writing your personal statement where you actually write your personal statement.

Your rough draft, or first draft, doesn’t need to be perfect. Writing a rough draft is just about getting your ideas down; the next stage, revising, is when you focus on the fine details. For now, just write whatever comes to mind and worry about improving it later.

Just as when you’re writing a college essay , start strong with an opening hook, then expand on that idea in the following paragraphs. In this personal statement example from a chemistry applicant , the writer starts off with a seemingly unrelated personal anecdote, stoking the reader’s curiosity:

Swimming from a young age always made me ponder the thought, who cleans the pool and how do they do it? As I grew older I realised it wasn’t a case of who, it is a case of what. Essentially, chemistry held the answer.

The writer then connects the opening anecdote to the main parts of the personal statement—what the reader wants to know. In this case, it’s why they’re a good fit for the school’s chemistry program.

Writing objectively about yourself is not easy; you can’t always see the forest for the trees. If you feel stuck, it might help to try freewriting , a technique where you just write down everything that comes to mind, no matter if it’s unusable in the final draft. Freewriting is often the push you need to overcome an initial writer’s block.

Because the topic is your life, feel free to write openly and honestly. A lot of times, your readers want to hear your story in your own words —they can get the facts from your school records or résumé/CV, but they can only get your interpretation of these facts from you. Don’t disappoint them!

Choosing the perfect words and rearranging the structure is much easier when you already have a rough draft in front of you. Now, you can reread your personal statement and fix any areas that need improvement.

During the revision stage, follow these tips for self-editing , which include watching out for the passive voice, unnecessary words, repetition, long sentences, and a few other red flags. Don’t worry too much about spelling and grammar mistakes for now; you can handle those later when proofreading .

For personal statements, make sure everything would be clear to a reader who’s never met you. Because the topic is yourself, you may have forgotten to mention some key detail that a stranger wouldn’t know.

5 Proofreading

With your personal statement polished, you can begin proofreading . This is when you fix all the technical problems like spelling and grammar mistakes, as well as other general issues like formatting.

Before you start proofreading, it’s a good idea to take a break from working on your personal statement. For one thing, it’s healthy for you to take some time to relax, especially if you’ve been working on it for a long time. Moreover, returning to your draft after you’re refreshed can help you notice small problems you hadn’t seen before.

If you’re not confident with your knowledge of English spelling or grammar, you can always get help. Grammarly’s writing suggestions find and highlight any mistakes you make while typing, so you can go back and fix them whenever you like. On top of that, Grammarly’s tone detector helps with your phrasing, letting you know if your language is appropriately formal for a personal statement.

Those features are all available in Grammarly’s free offering, with even more in Grammarly Premium . Download Grammarly now to see how your writing improves.

6 Submitting

The last step is an easy one: Turn in your personal statement. Double-check that you’ve fulfilled the requirements, including word count, and make sure it’s in the requested format (PDF, Word document, etc.).

What comes next, though, is truly the hardest part of writing a personal statement: waiting for a response back!

Effectiveness in Personal Mastery

Personal mastery.

In the contemporary world of business, leadership is growing more complex and flexible. The skills of a successful leader are linked to a broad scope of factors some of which people can inherit as aspects of their personalities and characters, and some can be learned and developed over time. The modern leaders build themselves, as most of the leadership abilities and skills can be obtained via practice and learning. As a result, such practices and lifelong learning, ongoing self-improvement, and self-reflection are known as extremely valuable for a good leader.

One of the practices that have been gaining popularity among the contemporary leaders is personal mastery that is defined as a leader’s ability allowing them look deeply into their own level of self-development, professionalism, and reflect on the qualities that are used on a daily basis, as well as the ones required for the individual and professional growth (Senge, 2006). What defines the concept of personal mastery is the approach that all the key features, skills, and abilities, as well as the factors that define one’s performance and success as a leader, lie within their individual personality (Senge, Kleiner, Roberts, Ross, & Smith, 1994).

It can be noted that personal mastery is tightly connected to emotional maturity and intelligence of an individual because its major objective is to enable this person to look inwards with the highest degree of objectivity and be self-reflective and focused enough to acknowledge and recognize self-deception, fear, laziness, projection, and other factors that we sometimes use unconsciously to distract ourselves from the personal challenges we do not wish to handle (Senge et al., 1994).

Self-awareness fostered by personal mastery allows people who have developed the latter skill to be more successful at achieving their goals because they have a better understanding why these goals are the priorities and what has to be done for their accomplishment (Phillips & Baker, n.d.).

Plan Elements

Personal mastery can be achieved via several different pathways (Cropper, 2014). In particular, these elements can be organized in a plan and work as separate elements contributing to one’s self-improvement as a leader.

When it comes to my top individual values, I think I must name self-awareness (or emotional intelligence) and intelligence as the primary ones. Also, in regard to interpersonal relations, I value integrity (or faithfulness) and compassion. Finally, as a value of a more global nature, I should name taking care of the world and people around. I chose to name values of different levels (personal, interpersonal, and global) because I believe that an individual (especially a leader) with a high level of personal mastery must always take into consideration the effects he or she can produce on multiple levels. In fact, I think that the repercussions of every action can go far beyond their personal space and make an effect on other individuals, groups, or even the society in general.

On a large scale, the point of my life (and I believe, it to be the pint of most people’s being in this world) – is the improvement of self that goes along the improvement of the world around. In particular, I noticed that happy people gravitate to healthy and nurturing choices whereas unhealthy and destructive behaviors are usually the indicators of people’s struggles in life. Accordingly, healthier choices always lead to the creation a happier world around oneself – such a person begins to desire to help others, spread happy environment, and include more people.

In that way, I envision it as my purpose to transform myself into that nourishing and approving individual free from destructive intentions and thoughts and building a more beautiful environment around. Specifically, I want to start with my closest ones (family and friends) and better myself to be able to affect them positively – become a source of help and understanding practically and emotionally. In the future, I see myself as a guide, a tutor, or a coach of a larger group of people, a motivational speaker, and a leader who has answers. I would like to improve my ability to see deep within people and situations and thus analyze them better for the successful decision-making.

In order to bring myself closer to the goal of becoming a guide and a wise advisor to the people around on multiple levels, I believe I should focus on the development of such skills as critical thinking and emotional intelligence.

In my understanding, one of the most effective ways to stimulate the development of these skills is practice of thinking about and reflecting on the situations and phenomena that I usually struggle to understand or accept fully. The contemporary globalizing world is a place full of controversies and social norms or ideologies that I find significantly different from my views. I think it could be a great exercise to research some of these ideas and phenomena, learn about them with the intention to understand the perspectives of people that support and share them. It could help to participate in a debate or face people talking with whom I usually find difficult. These activities could be done for the purpose of strengthening my ability to control personal emotional reactions and let my logical mind be in change and not my feelings.

Summary/ Next Steps

Developing personal mastery is a lifelong process that requires constant attention and focus. However, the benefit is that it can be stimulated in a variety of ways and, along the way, helps boost the skills and abilities that are applied on a regular basis in the communication with friends, family, and colleagues.

The role of a leader does not end in the workplace but continues in personal life. A leader is not solely a person who stands at the head of a group and points to the right direction. A leader is a deep thinking person with a unique set of traits and skills allowing him or her generate more complex ideas based on a clearer vision of situations and people. A leader is someone on whom many people could rely not because he or she was the only one who agreed to take charge but because he or she is equipped to be in charge.

I see my next steps in the development of emotional intelligence and maturity with the help of critical thinking and analysis. I also believe that it would boost my confidence if I deliberately put myself in non-habitual situations and attempted to handle them applying my values, leadership strengths, and objectivity. I also plan to better myself at understanding people’s emotions and thought processes, which means I should think of taking courses in psychology and sociology.

Personal Mastery - Definition and Importance to Learning

personal essays mastery test

Personal Mastery has many definitions but what is most important to understand is that it is not a destination or a definitive state, but a process. The idea that mastery is a process was described by Peter Senge, in his book ‘The Fifth Discipline.’

People with a high level of personal mastery live in a continual learning mode. They never “arrive.” ( Peter Senge )

The application of personal mastery is key to living an effective life and having a successful career. This has never been truer than at this time in history.

In this post we explore, what is Personal Mastery, why it is important and,  how to develop it.

Personal Mastery Definition

I define Personal Mastery as follows:

"Personal Mastery is the process of living and working purposefully towards a vision, in alignment with one’s values and in a state of constant learning about oneself and the reality in which one exists."

Personal Mastery and Self-leadership can be considered synonymous. They both require self-awareness, self-management, and self-learning. There are some distinctions, but they might be academic. Here is the definition of Self-leadership:

“The Practice of intentionally influencing your thinking, feeling, and actions towards your objectives” ( Bryant & Kazan 2012 )

The Importance of Personal Mastery

"To thine own self be true".

In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Polonius gives this personal mastery advice to his son, Laertes, before the young man travels abroad. But Polonius doesn’t tell Laertes how to do this.

How can we be true to ourselves if we don’t know who we are, what our values are, and what our vision is?

The maxim “Know thyself” was reportedly inscribed in the Temple of Apollo in the ancient Greek city of Delphi.

In this current age of Social Media and AI, if we are to attain personal mastery, we must decide who we are before an algorithm decides for us."

To be confident and effective, we must first influence ourselves, before we can lead and influence others. Organizations are looking for employees who take ownership and are accountable and in my role as an Executive Coach and Motivational Speaker , you will often hear me say…

“You can’t lead others unless your first lead yourself”

The task to know thyself, so that you can live an authentic life, is not for the faint hearted. It requires the realization that we are operating from mental models about ourselves and reality and that what we think of as ‘our truth’ might be just one version.

Like Neo waking up from the Matrix ( The Matrix 1999 ) we can be confused and disoriented and require a guide or coach like Morpheus to orient us. This is a paradox, self-leadership or personal mastery rarely happens in solitude, it is usually a hero’s journey ( Joseph Campbell ) with various guides, traveling companions, and the occasional monster to slay.

Your road to personal mastery will, therefore, be a journey, but the alternative is to live an inauthentic and unfulfilled life of blissful ignorance or quiet desperation.

Personal Mastery and Organizational Learning

In this current disruptive age, organizational learning has become the only sustainable advantage. Senge noted the link between Personal Mastery and Organizational learning:

"Organizations learn only through individuals who learn. Individual learning does not guarantee organizational learning. But without it, no organizational learning occurs."

Smart companies and smart countries invest in learning. Singapore, for example, is providing grants and tax deductions for individual and organizational learning and upskilling.

Human Resource and Learning & Development professionals have long complained about limited budgets, but many now report a loosening of the purse strings as companies recognize the value of encouraging people to develop themselves.

Developing Personal Mastery

The first habit of Stephen Covey’s personal mastery book - ‘7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ is:

“Begin with the end in mind”

Those who are developing their personal mastery invest time and energy in developing their vision. By having a clear vision, they are more resilient to being ‘knocked off course’ by the disruptions of life.

Vision is a specific destination, an image of a desired future that is supported by a purpose (the reason why). Our ability to persevere and embrace the constraints and challenges presented by our current reality on our path toward achieving our vision is what characterizes mastery of the creative tension between where we are and where we want to be.

Covey used the metaphor of the compass to describe how values guide us toward our vision. Dr. Fons Trompenaars explains that:

“The value of a value is its ability to resolve an ambiguity”

When we know our values and the values of the organization we lead or work for, we are better equipped to make decisions when the outcome is uncertain.

I recently re-watched the movie Titanic (1997) with my teenage daughter. The decision to do so was driven by my value to be a good father, but the additional value I received was a reflection of the values that drove behaviors during that incident.

We know that the White Star Line owners of the RMS Titanic valued aesthetics over safety when they decided to not put the full quota of lifeboats on the decks. We know that during the sinking, the First-Class passengers had priority accessing the limited number of lifeboats, showing that all life was not valued equally.

This poses an interesting personal mastery question. If you say you value something, such as humanity or equality, would you sacrifice your life for it?

Less life-threatening, but potentially career-limiting decisions are required on a regular basis. Your boss or superior officer is doing something you consider wrong or illegal, does your value of integrity cause you to confront the behavior, or does your value of self-preservation inform you to keep quiet?

Personal mastery requires living a life in alignment with your values, but as you can see from the above examples, this can be challenging.

In my 2012 book, with Dr. Ana Kazan, Self-leadership – How to be a More Successful, Efficient and Effective Leader from the Inside out - we provide values exercises to help you develop the awareness and practice of these guiding principles.

3. Perspective

The self-awareness of one’s mental models, and the realization of the context, culture, and relationships we are in, requires developing perspective.

With perspective, we can step back from our own mindset, and question what something means in terms of our vision and values. Let me explain using a metaphor  with the game of football.

In life, we are often the player chasing the ball, unaware or not caring about the wider frame or context. We support a team because our father did, and our father’s father, and we rarely question what watching football means to us – this is NOT personal mastery.

Developing the discipline to look at situations from multiple perspectives is a hallmark of personal mastery. Here are a few Self-leadership coaching questions for you:

And finally, for this post, a quote to encourage you to continue your journey to Personal Mastery:

If you find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn't lead anywhere."- Frank A. Clark

Essay Personal Mastery

Analysis of the book ' leadership 101 ' by john maxwell.

What matters the most is what you do day by day over the long haul, explains the author. If you continually invest in your leadership and let your ‘assets’ compound, the inevitable result is growth overtime. While some are born with greater natural gifts than others, the ability to lead is really a collection of skills, with nearly all of which can be learned and improved. You can be a good leader if you want to, since everyone has the potential to be one, you just have to understand that you can’t accomplish it overnight. Leadership is complicated and has many facets, and it takes a lot of ‘seasoning’ to actually an effective leader. Whether you do or don’t have the natural ability for leadership, the author states that in the development and progress process probably occurred in the following four phases: Phase 1 being ‘I don’t know what I don’t know’ here a person doesn’t realize how valuable leadership is and believes it’s for people up the corporate ladder thus passing up the opportunity to learn how to lead. Phase 2 is ‘I know what I don’t know’ here you begin to realize the importance of learning how to lead and the learning process begins’. Phase 3 is ‘I grow and know and it starts to show’, in this phase you realize you lack skills and begin daily discipline of personal growth in leadership. In phase 4 ‘I simply go because of what I know’ is when you’re knowledgeable and your ability to lead

Essay on The Fifth Discipline by Peter Senge

Going beyond simply holding on to one's beliefs as conclusive, examining which models one is actually operating on. Personal mastery means working on developing one's vision, one's abilities, and one's focus of energy on a personal level. It is a divine inner drive to practice mastery, to be the best that one can be. Systems thinking is the fifth discipline. It is the ability and practice of examining the whole system on a regular basis, rather than just trying to fix certain problems. It is also using the conceptual framework and tools of systems thinking to clarify the full patterns and to understand how to effect the most change.

The Theory Of Self Determination

It may increase when through hard working and practical. In other words, intelligence are not innate, it’s something you can develop after born. (2) Mastery is a pain. Nothing people obtain without paying some cost. So getting intelligence, some skills or knowledge is not like playing games or having fun. This law tells people that it is not easy to get the mastery, people have to experience hard working. Mastery is not something that can be achieved easily, overnight. It takes what Pink calls “grit”, which is “perseverance and passion for long-term goals”. (3)Mastery is an asymptote. This law is not so easy to be understood at first. It means mastery is an objective in front of you always; you can approach it and really get close to it. But it is always out of reach. It sounds a little frustrating, but it can help people make progress and move forward all the time. During the process of closing to the mastery, you get your rewards and your enjoyment (Pink, 2009). Purpose is the third factor of Motivation 3.0, but it is the basis for the other two factors. Pink believes that an individual before doing any task must have purpose or objective. The employees must know why they do some task and what they can get from doing it. If the purpose is meaningful and profitable, then the employees will obtain more motivation to effectively finish their task. In conclusion, Whether personal fulfillment or academic success, we all need change to Type I from Type X. In my opinion

Reflection On Leadership

Leadership can be defined as coaching and mobilizing people and resources to achieve a goal. To be a leader one must have certain traits and skills that can be learned as well as certain attributes that can be nurtured. Leaders are in place to inspire, challenge, and encourage others. They should be able to persuade and influence, and also show flexibility and determination. Throughout this class I have read, seen, and done self –assessments that have shaped and influenced my perspectives on leadership.

Never Grow, By Ralph Waldo Emerson

Some people say that mastery is where you need to get to. But, is it really? There is always something further, something just out of reach. That you just need to work a little more so that you can reach it. That’s where your goals need to be, just out of your reach. This will make you work for, and not just sit back and relax. Life isn’t just gonna sit still, and let your mastery conquer it. Life is gonna fight back and put curves in your path. So, if you just focus on one thing you won’t be prepared for the curves and you're gonna crash.

Prejudice Can Be Hurtful and Destructive Example.

Self-evaluation or “self-leadership” (Runn, 2011) forms a critical part of a leaders repertoire and some key blocks of the foundation for this persons leadership. If someone can ultimately say that they fully understand themselves, they will find it much easier to understand others around them.

What I Learned in My Leadership Class

Before this class, I had a very primitive and vague definition of leadership. Not only did I define it as per my views and ideologies, but I also said that each individual has their own definition of leadership. My initial belief was that leadership does not have a clear cut definition, but there were well defined leadership traits which made an individual. I also initially believed that personal traits did not translate into leadership traits with no strong correlation. After going through the various modules this class offered, it is safe to say that I have significantly redefined leadership and underwent a strong personal assessment. This paper talks what I took back from each of the class activities, assignments and how my self-assessment compares to the perception of others.

My Leadership Philosophy

As a leader, it's important to know yourself. In fact, I believe you can't lead if you don't have some basic knowledge of who you are as a person; like beliefs or strengths and weakness. My leadership must incorporate not only my positive attributes but must be willing to make changes with aspects of my personality that don’t work. Admittedly, I am sensitive and also passive. I tend to avoid conflict as much as I can. These characteristics might lead to issues of weakening my leadership. Being a leader to me shows having to show a strong front to most people. That doesn't mean a person should compromise who they are. I have to have a certain image when I enter a classroom. I can learn to be more assertive and have a firm voice in a classroom. I looked at the Johari Window website, to see what results I would get on their quiz.

Personal Philosophy Of Leadership

The same is true for leadership. Not all who effectively lead are born with innate abilities that attract followers. Each of us brings our own combination of life experiences, personal traits and stylistic preferences to the practice of leadership. Through the act of deliberate reflection and contemplation, we become aware of ourselves and how our experiences and traits are likely to help or hinder our pursuit of effective leadership. We become aware of our personal truths, our strengths and our faults and I believe this is the foundation from which leadership is built.

My Leadership Philosophy Of My Career

Accomplish the mission by cultivating competence is my leadership philosophy. Competence is “the ability to do something successfully or efficiently” . It refers to the asset of knowledges and skills required to perform a given activities. My career field requires skills and adherence to technical instructions in every technical task. To achieve this, in my daily management I prioritize the discipline, the exemplary, and the courage. These values have marked my view of leadership throughout my career, by professional and social experiences, observations and our cultural realities.

The Elements Of Leadership And Management Essay

Leadership is something that can be taught (Northouse, 2015. There are some valuable theories, which will be discussed later in this paper, how a leader can develop into having a strong influence in any daily aspect of their lives. Also later in this paper it will be discussed the various styles of leaders that can affect the behaviors of the actions of each leader. Each leader can learn these attributes or some of them just have the natural capability of being a leader.

Questions On The Fifth Discipline

Personal Mastery – It begins "by getting the opportunity to be centered around enduring learning," and is the significant establishment of a learning affiliation. Singular Mastery incorporates being more viable, focusing on transforming into the best individual, and trying a sentiment obligation and enthusiasm in our jobs to support the affirmation of potential.

Study Skills Essay

The reason that most people High School don’t have good study skills is because they were not taught proper study habits in Elementary School, where this should be taught.

Both activities have shown me that the definition of a complex problem is in itself complex (Funke, 1991) and is subject to many interpretations by different researchers (Gray, 2002 and Wenke et al, 2005). It has also shown me that presenting a problem in a different manner can affect how the solutions are thought about (Gambrill, 2006).

Personal Mastery Paper Core Values In attempting to examine my inner core values I first need to define what this actually meaner to me. What are core values? Are they the personal standards about how we live and treat others. And if so, do the order of these values differ from work to family to recreation? I believe that my core values define me and are responsible for my decision, set very early in life, to pursue a career in healthcare. My most important inner core value is that of integrity. This principle relates to my being honest and truthful not only to my self but to all those with whom I come in contact.

This allows me to have moral principles where I try to make my intentions, decisions, and actions based on my belief o

f right and wrong. I then gain a sense of self respect making me proud of who I am. My next important inner core value is my intellectual personal characteristic, in that I am a person who uses thought, reason, and critical thinking in every thing I do and in all spheres of my life. This asset has definitely helped me in my medical career but has hindered me in the spontaneity of life.

As will be seen in my Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, this rational characteristic substantiates and validates my personality. It has had a major impact on my inner core value of responsibility. I t has made me trustworthy and reliable in my ability to carry out and complete the tasks of daily life in providing for my family, raising children and achieving my goals of being

a dependable physician. My belief in being disciplined is a strong personal characteristic affecting my behavior and way of working . I am very focused in what I do and how I conduct my personal behavior.

A large part of my inner core values is my belief in affection with a devotion to caring and trust in others. I believe in the nonviolence of people to do good, having a sense of altruism and selflessness. These core values guide me in developing by personal board of directors. These individuals have influenced me in the past and will continue to direct, manage and guide me in making decisions and choices for the rest of my life. This board has helped me hone my strategies to deal with the obstacles that I have encountered .

They will continue to encourage me to create balances between family, work and the need to regenerate my energy both internally and externally in dealing with the complexities of life. The chairman of my board of directors will be my parent's who have instilled in me a sense of hard work and ethical behavior. They have guided me to relentlessly work to accomplish my dreams and even though they lived in the lowest group of the socio- economic society, they believed in my ability to achieve and they sacrificed all that they could so that I could become the person that I am today. They instilled in me my core value of altruism and kindness.

My next important board member would be my twin brother who although may genetically be a carbon copy of me, has always been blew to step back

and be a critical reviewer of my decisions and a sounding board in times of crises. The giants in business Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, would definitely be on my board of directors. They have both made tough choices in the management of their own companies to achieve their ultimate unparalleled success stories. I need them to balance the emotions of trust and caring that I have for people with the often tough and impersonal choices that need to be made in aspects of life and business.

They would also be beneficial in opening doors to my career vision and help me in management skills, deficiencies I will discuss later in this paper. The dean of my medical school, Phillip Tibias is there both as a visionary, and an intellectual and will be the global visionary to my decisions. The last two member of this exemplary group of people are in my profession, Wolf Titian and Atoms Falconer. They embody a powerhouse of knowledge in my work field, also having experience in leadership and professionalism. They are intellectual and have inspired me in my chosen specialty of reproductive endocrinology and infertility.

My board must not be a rubber stamp but must be able to review and help me make session in all the facets of my personal, professional and educational goals. The table will be round as all my board members are equally important to me. My personal style The Myers-Briggs Type indicator was a very accurate assessment of my personality, behavior patterns, learning style and helped be understand how I make decisions. I am proud to be a "SITS". I am a staunch introvert

with regard to my personal interactions with people. This is made even more challenging for me with regard to group dynamics.

I have a much more reserved personality, which is more focused on my inner strengths, beliefs and aloes. I recharge my body more easily when I am alone and learn and make decisions by reflecting on the data presented to me. The "S" and "T" in me refers to the manner in which I assimilate and process information, doing so in a very organized, logical and exacting way. I am very factual and concrete and make decisions based on experience and observation which allows me to be focused on what is happening in the present. I notice facts and details and enjoy viewing life from a practical standpoint.

This process may sometimes cause me to miss the "big picture". I am certain I have an under developed right brain function for creative and imaginative thinking which has steered me away from certain career paths and recreational activities. My thinking is very analytical and exacting . This being said I still strive for equality in the treatment of others. I prefer to analyze the pros and cons of each decision or choice that I make but this aspect of my personality unfortunately may make me seem to be too task oriented and uncaring.

The last part of this AMBIT equation is the "J" in me which allows me to be very scheduled and organized. Its impact on my lifestyle preference makes me be a planner in all aspects, as this characteristic makes me feel settled and more comfortable when life is under control. My 1ST]

in my personality allows me to be reserved, serious, and very dependable. It's impact in dealing with people in my professional and family life has made me very practical, realistic, and responsible. I try to decide logically what should be done and work toward the end with perseverance and tenacity.

Making everything orderly and organized gives me a sense of pleasure and allows me to feel more relaxed about ark, home, and in life. Career vision My career vision is very complex as I have two divergent career paths that may not allow me to accomplish both at the same time without affecting my overall balance of life. These two career goals will definitely have a negative impact on in my non-career goals and objectives by not allowing me the time and space to achieve my bucket list of recreational activities that involve travel and scuba diving.

My career vision in the practice of medicine is to provide the one on one patient care which gives me with a tremendous personal satisfaction in helping couples achieve here goals of having a family. The field of infertility has grown exponentially from its early days of limited success for a narrow population of women with fallopian tube problems to a field of allowing all types of infertility problems to be treated.

The expanding specialty also allows us to preserve eggs, embryos and sperm for men and women going through cancer treatment and so preserve there fertility options for the future. The field is revolutionary in giving families children who have a healthy genetic makeup from couples who may carry a major genetic disease, by us hosing embryos

that have been screened for these life threatening conditions and preventing the emotional agony of loosing a child with a non treatable condition.

The divergence in this career vision is my goal to move into more of a managerial and corporate role in the health care sector and to manage and hopefully have an impact in the future of healthcare in the United States. I am hopeful the time needed to accomplish both these goals is available to me. As I review my career thus far, and as my experiences both in life and my chosen career accumulates, my personal preferences and strengths have become more apparent to me. My career anchor that almost certainly fits with my goals and aspirations is in the technical and functional arena.

I do see that this has been a strong attribute in my career choice of enjoying the specialization, highly focused knowledge and functional traits and skills that I have accumulated This type of career priority may limit my ambition to be in a general managerial role as I may not have all the information and knowledge that I desire, in order to feel completely comfortable to make decisions, lead and achieve a desired solution. Genie: In order to merge these two differing competences, I would instruct my genie to develop a large multi-national healthcare center specifically tailored to treating fertility.

This would allow me to continue my passion in dealing with a highly specialized field within health care but also further expand my expertise in having a management component to the position. The multi-national positioning would also then help fulfill the balance of my career with the

other side of the equation of life involving family and recreation, as it would allow me to travel. Competencies My view of my greatest strengths and weaknesses are easy for me to write about although they may be perceived differently by both my peers and family.

I am a "planner" who internally in detail what I feel needs to be accomplished and then will organize my activities in order to achieve this objective. I am able to adapt or modify my set list of steps that I originally set to accomplish this goal, but try not deviate from this path without carefully assessing the risks and benefits of modifying the strategy. I try to be efficient with careful thought placed about the use of time and energy without compromising attention to detail. My personality only then allows me to be content with the final outcome if I perceive it to be of a high standard.

This way of doing things is ingrained into my work, family and recreational pursuits. My medical training has given me a tremendous empathy for others with the ability to read and understand the moods, intentions and non-verbal behavior of other people. This attribute allows me to both listen attentively and understand both the capability and well as the limitations of the person or group of people. An area of weakness that I posses, may be a degree of inflexibility to other ways of eating to a particular goal even if we are trying to achieve the same objective.

Although this relatively unyielding philosophy is not to a point of obstinacy which may Jeopardize the end goal or create a situation

of alienating a person. Another area of weakness is that I often do not present myself in a forceful, confident and self-assured manner. Although I fully believe in my ability, my reserved nature may make me seem less decisive than I would like to portray myself. Lastly my inability to communicate easily in written form to the depth of which Zeal intend to envoy, may appear more abbreviated than intended.

This characteristic may spill over into my ability in a group setting to give a structured and organized presentation. Goal setting My bucket list is not very long and as such was relatively easy to compile. Some goals may be easy to achieve and some may never be attained. My occupational vision to lead a world class fertility unit is definitely achievable. To leave behind a legacy of bringing Joy to many individuals and families I think I may have already attained but to leave behind a heritage of medical discovery may not be attainable without hanging my patient oriented focus.

My goal to accomplish financial security for my family may eventually be achieved but a driving force to retire young is probably gone by the wayside. My recreational bucket list is much easier to obtain but will involve time management and balance between "work and play'. I will need to carve out time to scuba dive, fly a plane and learn Spanish. The last items to make my life complete will be to see my 2 children graduate and achieve health, happiness and financial stability and hopefully in the distant future, to play with my grandchildren.

Synthesis and optimization Now that I have had

time to document my goals, personality style, values, competencies and career vision, I now need to see how each aspect has helped or hindered, and directed or misdirected my achievements so far. I need to examine how the complex interaction of each aspect, has created and molded me into the person I am today both professionally and personally. My accumulating knowledge has allowed me to see Just like any organization each of my values goals and beliefs are interdependent.

This self examination will allow me to step back and try understand why the decisions I make and the problems I deal with on a day to day sass have occurred and how they collectively and not individually need to be modified or balanced to create a better "system". This word system as defined by Daft (33) meaner "a set of interrelated parts that function as a whole to achieve a common purpose". (()) Most importantly by understanding my introverted personality and reserved nature I am now able to see the influence it has on how I perceive and analyze all situations.

It is clear to me that this has had a negative impact on many of my goals and visions. I know that in order to progress I will need to make a concerted effort, when certain vents or situations arise, to overcome this perceived reluctance or hesitancy to interact more forcefully and enthusiastically. I do believe that this personality difference of introvert or extrovert, is not a separate entity, but is a spectrum. The trait of being an introvert can be modified or suppressed in certain situations.

This ability to change or overcome (with

some effort) will then have a positive influence in helping me achieve my one goal of leadership. Given the above need for alterations in my introverted personality at times, I still feel that my inner strengths, belief and values will still not change and that I will need to charge and gain my energy through reflection and the need to be an analytical thinker. The next challenging synthesis and development I need to center on is my narrow and focused way of dealing with all tasks.

In order to develop a systems approach and not to be caught in a linear model of thinking, I the need to balance my focused and disciplined behavior patterns to a more open and superficial model. This will be important in order to see the interactions and dependence of all the aspects of the given situation. I need not to place each event or situation, whether in a work or Emily setting, in to separate silo's as I may loose the ability to see the "big picture". This ability is a very important optimization for me to become a better manager and leader.

My personal board of directors, especially the visionaries of Professor Tibias, Mr.. Gates and Mr.. Jobs will help me channel the narrow focus of analytical thinking and exacting reasoning to a much broader and more diverse view about the matters at hand. I would not want to forgo my intellectual personal characteristic of thought, reason and critical thinking as it does fit well with my career choice within medicine of in trio fertilization and robotic surgery. The focus needed in each of the two specialties cannot

waiver even in situations of outside pressures and expectations.

That being said, to achieve a balance between my two divergent career aspirations of continuing in direct patient care and the desire to increase my leadership role both locally and nationally, will definitely be a very difficult task. Some of the possible decreased satisfaction I obtain from direct patient care, which is part of my inner core value of altruism and selflessness, would need to be replaced with his goal of leadership. This tradeoff cannot come at the expense or detriment of the job satisfaction that I attain in patient care.

I may find that this leadership role does not satisfy me enough to continue on the divergent paths of patient care and management. I do believe all of ones goals and aspirations are a moving target and at times may need to be reappraised and if necessary adjusted to fit overall life expectations. A further expansion in this examination of my personality traits will be to be the need to modify, at times, my desire for a scheduled, organized and methodical way of accomplishing my objectives whether in a work or family environment.

To paraphrase Daft "an organism is not static, and must continuously adapt to shifts in the external environment" ((daft peg 8). In order to be a more successful individual, it is important that I be able to adapt or accept to other ways of achieving the same desired endpoint. The need to be adaptable, open ended and spontaneous may decrease many of my life stress. This ability to be flexible, as long as it does not compromise my core values of responsibility

and reliability, will make a team working environment ore fluid, cordial and less confrontational.

Even in this ability to adapt, I would never compromise my integrity in order to attain a set target. As my moral compass is a strong part of my values, I would not be content or feel that I had accomplished an objective if my personal values were modified or altered in order to satisfy someone else's intentions or desires. My parent's on my board of directors would almost certainly keep me from straying from this path of compassion and empathy. A eve important concept that I will need to learn and adapt to, is the need improve y interrupt competence in order to be able to direct and supervise a large group of people.

Even though my personality is very organized and methodical, this skill needs to be able to be transferred to an organizational level. I feel that I already have the analytical ability to be able to identify and solve problems as well as the emotional capability to not be overwhelmed by the responsibility of the position, but need the support and direction of my personal board of directors to master the ability to make difficult decisions at a interpersonal level without a felling of remorse r guilt.

These hard and sometimes emotional decisions, as difficult as they may be, will not affect my inner core value of affection and belief in others. The last part of this in-depth analysis of my personality and its influence on my personal ambitions, behaviors and aspirations is to try and develop a balance between my all encompassing career goals and that

of my family and recreational desires. In writing this paper, it reaffirmed my knowledge already known to me for many years, that my 70 hour work week has already had a major impact on my family.

The desire to add a leadership role to my career does mean, in order not to devastate my family and prevent me from continuing to pursue travel and teaching scuba diving, I will need to learn to manage and delegate some of the responsibility. This need to entrust to another person the responsibility to continue on a set pathway and to achieve a perfect outcome may be difficult at times as the core value of reliability is an important one to me. This being said, to have the time to regroup and continue on the pace I have set for myself, I have little choice but trust my instincts in the ability of others.
