The Hate in Psychological Context

Hate is defined as the “intense hostility or the aversion usually deriving from fear, anger, or sense of injury” (“Hate” n.pag.). Psychologists say that hate is a derivative of pride or guilt (“Emotions” n.pag.). The former is the emotion directed to other people, whereas the later is the feeling which we have in relation to ourselves (“Emotions” n.pag.). Paranoia is close to hate, but it is far more intensive than the hate and reflects a pathological stance of mentality. However, the scholars argue that hate is a feeling supporting clear thinking, cools the minds, and strengthens the will (“Emotions” n,page.). “There are two factors at the root of hatred: the devaluation of the victim and the ideology of the hater” (Navarro et al. 11). Hate is a strong negative feeling which can be the result of the unethical behavior, the lack of education, and the errors in thinking. Undoubtedly, the control over yourself is the primary tool of avoiding negative feelings but it is not the only one. The feeling of anger and hate is very often the quality of the people who have inner problems. Sometimes it is the question of the self-confidence or the morality. Nevertheless, hate is one of the important aspects of people communication as it affects it negatively. Therefore, we need to know how to turn the negative feelings into the positive ones not allowing them destroying our life.

Hate Speech and Violence

“Hate speech – the advocacy of hatred based on nationality, race or religion – occupies an exceptional position in international law” (“Hate Speech” n.pag.). First of all, hate speech is contrary to ethical behavior. Secondly, it provokes conflicts. The international law states that all people have equal rights regardless of race, sex, or social status. That is why hate speech violates the norms of international law. The hate speech is always characterized by the expression of anger, envy, and other negative emotions. It sharpens the conflict situation and if one of the parties losses control, these emotions can lead to violence and crime. “Violence is an extreme form of aggression, such as assault, rape or murder” (“Violence” n.pag.). Not always hate speech can lead to violence. However, taking into account the emotional overstrain of the situation which the hate speech maintains, the physical violence often results from it. Media can also provoke violence. Very often the emotional speech of the journalists can be described as a hate speech. Certainly, the same can be said about politicians and social activists who often make public appearances and strive to persuade the public in their views. History has a lot of examples of violent crimes resulted from hate speech. World War II is one of them as the hate speech of Adolf Hitler influenced the minds of the Germans politicians and militaries. In the context of law, there is a controversy between the right to freedom of expression and the hate speech which is often based on race, national or gender discrimination. That is why the international law prescribes a number of conditions of the hate speech laws to be respected: no one should be penalized for statements that are true and for the dissemination of the hate speech if it has not been shown that it was proclaimed with the intention of discrimination, hostility, or violence; no one should be subject to prior censorship and some other provisions (“Hate Speech” n.pag.).

Hate Speech Leads to One Side of an Argument which Leads to Misleading Others

Hate speech is always connected with the saying of the offensive words. It is based on the negative emotions and a person who expresses the hate in his speech is rarely able to make the right decision. This is because they have only their arguments on their mind, and their emotions do not allow them accepting the alternative views. Therefore, hate speech usually leads to one side of an argument. In addition, the hate speech puts pressure on others and if the counterparties in the conflict are not emotionally stable and cannot turn the situation in their favor, the hate speech can result into the misleading of others.

In order to sum up all the above mentioned, it should be said that hate is a negative emotion which is based on pride or guilt. However, the aggression and anger which are connected with hate can lead to violence. The hate speech can also result in physical violence and crimes. The international law has certain provisions which are aimed at preventing the hate speech.

Communication serves five major goals: informing, expressing feelings, imagining, influencing, and meeting social expectations. Each of these goals is reflected in the form of communication.

This essay defines effective communication and puts forth its importance in everyday life with the help of a few examples. It also explains miscommunication that occurs when a message is not communicated clearly. An example from Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is used to show how miscommunication can happen. This paper refers to works of Angeliki Tzanne and Julia T. Wood to get a better insight into effective communication. Learning theories and principles of effective communication can help to make communication in everyday life more effective. Therefore, theories of communication as explained by Claude Elwood Shannon and C. S. Lewis have been briefly discussed here. Keywords: effective communication Effective communication is a two-way process; it refers to the transfer and receipt of information from one person to another or from one point to another. The communication process, therefore, must include at least two people or points to play the role of the sender and the receiver. To complete this process, the message conveyed by the sender must be understood by the receiver of the message. This is true of all methods of communication: verbal, non-verbal, written and electronic. According to author C. S. Lewis, effective communication requires clarity of expression on the part of the sender and accuracy of understanding on the part of the receiver for whom the message is intended. The “rhetoric” used by the sender must be clear for the receiver to understand and interpret, and shared meaning must be achieved to make the communication complete and effective. Otherwise, miscommunication and not effective communication has occurred.

Miscommunication is defined as the failure to clearly communicate either because of problems in hearing or understanding the rhetoric of the sender. Angeliki Tzanne states that a miscommunication can result in “partial or ambiguous understanding”, “nonhearing” (Grimshaw, 1980) or “nonunderstanding” (Zaefferer, 1977). Let’s look at an example of miscommunication from the computer-animated comedy film Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. Recall the scene where the monkeys make a monkey-chain by holding hands and rescue Alex, the lion, from the tourists’ colony. In this scene, Alex and his father Zuba are inside the bucket that the plane has dropped, with the monkey-chain holding onto it. When he sees Nana, the old lady, Alex says “She’s got a gun! Let’s get out while we can!” and asks the monkeys to pass on his message up the monkey-chain. Alex’s message gets miscommunicated by the monkey called Mason and what Marty, the zebra, gets is the message “Let’s have some fun and take out the dam.” Marty, therefore, asks the penguins who are flying the plane to take out the dam. The old lady is adamant about eating Alex, stands on top of the dam and shoots many times to bring the plane down. Soon she is out of bullets. As a last resort, she waves her hand bag just before the bucket strikes the dam, breaks through it and sends the water back down the drying river. The animals in the reserve are overjoyed to see the water flowing toward the watering hole. They accept Alex as an alpha lion and nullify his banishment from the reserve.

Importance of Effective Communication

This is a rare case where miscommunication has proved to be useful. In everyday life, both personal and professional, this is not the case; miscommunication between family members, friends and colleagues can cause chaos, confusion and arguments. Therefore, communicating to family members, friends or colleagues should not be taken for granted, because it is an everyday activity. Effective communication has become all the more important in today’s multicultural world. Julia T. Wood lists “long-distance friendships, romantic relationships, public speaking, interviewing, classroom learning, and productive group discussion” as contexts where effective communication is important. Let’s take a look at a family of four where effective communication on a daily basis is vital. Anshula is a senior consultant working with an E-learning solutions provider in India. Her job responsibilities include communicating with the company’s overseas clients and subject matter experts. Though it is a nine-to-five job, she usually needs to carry work home. She lives with her eight-year old son and mother-in-law. Her husband works for an oil and gas company in the Middle East. The company follows an on-and-off-duty schedule; when on duty, her husband stays away from home for forty consecutive days and when not on duty, he stays at home taking care of a family business. As a family, they get less time to spend with each other and communicate. To keep miscommunication at bay, Anshula has made it an everyday activity to call her son and chitchat with him after he reaches home from school. The family also considers dinnertime an occasion to sit together and listen to one another. She also sends short messages to her husband as frequently as possible giving him updates on their son’s activities at home and school.

Importance of Learning Communication Theories

Like Anshula, we rely on effective communication on a daily basis to connect and bond with our family members, friends and colleagues. Knowing a theory or two on effective communication can help us to be more effective in communicating with others. For instance, Anshula has insight into the communication that maintains the bond between family members; so she is able to keep the family together despite the limited time they get to spend as a family. She knows how to listen better to her son; it helps her to find out if anything is going wrong at home or in school. She knows how to manage time so that she can take time out of her busy schedule for her family. Knowing a few communication theories and following a few principles of effective communication have helped Anshula to maximize her abilities as an effective communicator, both in her personal and professional life.

Shannon’s Theory of Communication

Claude Elwood Shannon, known as "the father of information theory", explains human communication system. According to him, human communication system consists of a sender that is the source of information, a transmission medium that has a noise source and a receiver that reconstructs the message. Shannon explains the system with the help of a schematic diagram. Recall the rescue scene from Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa again. The scene is useful to understand Shannon’s theory of communication. An information source (Alex) produces a message to be communicated to the receiving terminal; a transmitter (monkeys in the monkey-chain) produces a signal suitable for transmission over the channel and the channel (monkey-chain) transmits the signal from the transmitter to the receiver. Finally, the receiver (Mason) reconstructs the message from the signal and pass it on to the destination (Marty) for whom the message is intended. Shannon adapts his theory to analyze ordinary human language. He states that it is redundant to use more symbols and words than necessary to convey messages. Michael McCrary when doing research on C. S. Lewis’ estranged relationship with his father Albert Lewis discovers that when “verbally disciplining his young children, he often became intoxicated by the very words he chose, which prompted him to use more of them.” He quotes C.S. Lewis, "all the resources of his (Albert Lewis) immense vocabulary were poured forth". Therefore, later when C.S. Lewis comes up with his theory of communication, he emphasizes that the sender of the message adheres to two principles of effective communication: brevity and clarity of the message. He adds that when communicating the message clearly, the sender should also know the abilities of the receiver to understand the message.

It is clear that a person does not have to be an eloquent speaker or a certified communicator to communicate more effectively in everyday life. McCrary writes that C.S. Lewis, “one of the most effective communicators of this century” and Albert Lewis, “an eloquent court solicitor and public speaker known for his gift of simple exposition” have failed to communicate with each other throughout their lives and thus failed to show their genuine love for each other. To communicate more effectively, we just need to understand how the human communication system functions and follow these basic principles: brevity and clarity of the message on the part of the sender and accuracy of understanding on the part of the receiver. When a message is composed, the sender should also know the abilities of the receiver to understand the message so that shared meaning is achieved.

(Webster Dictionary). To me, communication is defined as the universal connection between people and animals. An example of this includes body language. Then there is the Paralinguistic aspect which involves the pitch, timing and volume used, these can help to emphasis their words. Lastly there is the non verbal aspect which is to me the most important, as any carer can learn a lot from someone 's body movements. This is vitally important when working with someone with dementia as this is believed to be the most important as the service user may suffer speaking verbally , so this can sometimes be the key to communication. Essay on Importance of Communication

essay about communication in our daily life

Importance of Communication Essay

Communication can be defined as sending and receiving information through face-to-face conversation or via email and phone about anything. When one is good at communicating information the receiver can perceive it very clearly and there is no scope for misunderstandings. Being a good communicator comes in handy in every aspect of life whether one is a student, in professional as well as personal life. If one is not able to convey well it leads to miscommunication.

Here in the importance of communication essays in English, we will explore different ways to write them. We have provided a long and short essay on the importance of communication.

Long Essay on Importance of Communication

In this long importance of communication essay, we will go through the meaning, types, and importance to give a proper idea in simple words to the reader.

Communication meaning has changed drastically throughout only a couple of years since the advent of technology. Earlier communication meant having to converse about feelings, emotions, views, and ideas all while sitting before one another or in a group. With technology, one can communicate via email where one can send a message to an entire group.

The influx of smartphones has brought about an entirely different culture of communication. Smartphones have cameras that make it easier to communicate via video calls and conference calls between a group of people are also possible today. This generation of millennials is also adapting to social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram for business and personal communication as well.

However, with the rapid changes in technology the fact that only good communication will get the job done remains unchanged. Before understanding the ways to better communicate with others we should understand the parts and types of communication.

Parts of communication include the sender who forms the message, then the message itself which should be very clear and understandable, and the receiver whose job is to decode the message. There is a high probability that the same message can be perceived poles apart by two different people. This problem can be avoided when the sender understands the mode of communication.

Types of Communication

There are many different types and modes of communication, like verbal, non-verbal, written, visual and formal, and informal communication.

The most common one is Verbal Communication which involves the use of speech and language by both the sender and receiver. The message here is conveyed through the usage of words.

In non-verbal communication, the body language of the parties involved in communication or discussion is important. It is not an overly loud way of conversing, so the signs can likely be missed or misinterpreted in this type of communication. One should be a shrewd observer to understand the subtle ways of non-verbal communication. It is in the movement of limbs, eyes, the direction of tilted shoulders, or whether one is fidgeting and flinching, etc.

The written form of communication is a crucial one and at the same time, it is very tricky. One must very carefully construct the words in a written form as this can be documented for years to come. The use of written communication is in professional terms like circulars, memos, letters, and bank statements. Only experts get involved in drafting written statements when legalities are concerned.

Visual communication means conveying information through graphical representation like statistical data, pie charts, and bar graphs. All of this should also be based on facts and not mere assumptions.

The formal way of communicating is obeyed with colleagues and seniors wherein the sender needs to be controlled and measured in words as everything is for official purpose.

Informal communication is with peers and friends groups where there is a camaraderie between such groups and it can be casual with no rules and obligations and formalities.

When one is not a good communicator the repercussions can be of varying degrees to different people. In an official environment if miscommunication occurs one might even be suspended or lose their job. So one must learn the ways and importance of good communication.

Ways to Be a Good Communicator:

Knowing the audience one is addressing is the primary and most important step. If there is a younger audience the language must be simple and targeted specifically to them. Using difficult language and big words to show off one’s ability in such a case is futile.

Usage of a non-verbal mode of communication can be very effective. Like making eye contact when speaking can give a better understanding of the extent of grasping information of the audience.

Preparation before speaking is very important. One must be fully aware of the importance and objective of the message to be conveyed.

Usage of images and drawings, if need be one must explain using pictures as they can give a different perspective to the audience you are passing on the information to.

Be clear and precise and there is no need to add extra pieces of information when not required.

Listening more attentively before jumping to conclusions is very important.

Need and Importance of Good Communication:

Promotes cooperation and improves the working environment. When everyone is on the same page about what is expected, then people work in teams to complete the task.

Enhances working relationships and fosters a strong team. When there is good communication practice there are no misunderstandings and people find it easier to trust others.

Effective communication increases managerial efficiency. As higher management can trust their subordinates to do the work in less time than allotted.

Decision-making becomes easier as everyone can contribute their ideas and brainstorming also can be fun and creative.

Healthy relationships can be formed be it professional or personal. When one can communicate themselves well enough then they earn the respect of others and this only forms lasting bonds.

Short Essay on Importance of Communication

In this short importance of communication essay, a brief account of the communication methods and importance is discussed.

Communication and the need for it to be good has become increasingly important in all fields of life. Communication is a way to pass on information about a certain belief, emotions, feelings, and ideas from one person to another or from one person to a group of people. In today’s world English is the most important language to communicate with others and socialize.

The formal way of communication is usually in an official setup and people use more formal language and controlled ways of conveying information. Whereas informal communication is the opposite, there are no set rules and only casual language in such a form of communication.

However, the importance of good communication is as important in any form of communication as it improves the work environment, there is no communication gap, all jump on the same bandwagon, one can easily find solutions when they communicate their issues and problems with clarity.
