Fast Food vs Homemade Food

Homemade food is better than fast food because it’s healthy, cheaper, and you control what’s in your food. Food is the most important thing that keeps us alive so we have to choose wisely on what we eat. But some people choose to eat meals that are giving to you in less than five minutes than a meal that takes thirty or more minutes. Fast food and homemade food also have their similarities because you could choose what you want to eat and when you want it.

Fast food attracts people because its ready to go anytime of the day and many people don’t have that time to actually make a meal. Many people rely on fast food because it’s convenient to them and you could find a fast food place at almost any corner in a town. Everyone is busy you’re a college student, you work a lot, or your kids are keeping you busy so you are always in a rush so you don’t have the time to make a actual meal but that doesn’t mean your eating habits have to be a rush.

When you’re making food at home you have control of the ingredients going in and what’s not going in. When eating fast food you don’t know if its health because you don’t know what is being put in the food you’re eating. For example, you could go to McDonalds and get a hamburger from the dollar menu or make your own at home, they both look the same and are probably going to be the same size but the differences between them are the calories in the hamburger and the tastes.

By making your own you know what kind of percent of fat is in the meat.

Almost all fast food restaurants look for deals so they would buy meat that has more percent of fat because it’s cheaper than meat that has less percent of fat. People keep feeding their kids fast food but what they don’t think about is it could lead their children to obesity in the future. By feeding them home made food you will have more control of their weight and they will have more energy throughout the day.

Cooking at home dose take time out of your day but you also save much more money than eating out because when you cook at home you could cook one meal and that meal could last you all day or you could save the food for the next day. For example you could buy a five pound bag of chicken breast and use it for different types of meals for the week. Also, cooking at home could bring you family together and make the preparation go by faster. Both fast food and homemade food have differences and similarities. Fast food is more convenient and takes less time were as homemade food is healthier and saves you money.

“Benefits of Homemade Food”

Now someone could ask, Why is choosing between fast food and homemade food important. It is important because you are in control of your body and if you don’t make healthy choices, you might end up becoming obese and I don’t think anyone would personally want to be obese, since it not only contributes to diabetes and high cholesterol which is unhealthy but is also known as a disease. According to Obesity Medicine Association, “Obesity is related to genetic, psychological, physical, metabolic, neurological, and hormonal impairments. It is intimately linked to heart disease, sleep apnea, and certain cancers. Obesity is one of the few diseases that can negatively influence social and interpersonal relationships”. This quote shows how obesity can harmfully impact our life which is why we should be careful with what we consume since it can destroy us. These are some of the results of eating unhealthy. We tend to think some foods are healthy but in reality they are the ones harming us. For example; Tropicana Orange juice has 23 grams of sugar in one serving. Many people may not look at the nutritious facts because oranges are healthy and we assume that there can’t be anything unhealthy about an orange juice. Also, we should avoid drinking soda at all costs because the amount of sugar it contains is mind blowing; for example, 4 grams of sugar is equivalent to 1 teaspoon of sugar and one can of Pepsi has 41 grams of sugar which is almost 11 teaspoons of sugar. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), “the maximum amount of sugars you should eat in a day are : men 150 calories per day (37.5 grams or 9 teaspoons), women 100 calories per day (25 grams or 7 teaspoons )”. This shows how drinking one can of Pepsi can ruin our daily sugar intake because the amount of sugar that Pepsi contains is much higher than what we should consume per day. Therefore avoiding soft drinks like Pepsi helps us take a step towards the healthy scale of eating.

Many teenagers struggle with acne due to hormonal imbalances, however some of us gets stubborn acne because of eating too much processed food. “A diet with a high glycemic index – basically, processed foods like bread and refined grains that are quickly broken down into sugar – can have a terrible effect on skin, refined carbs cause your insulin levels to spike, which in turn leads to increased sebum production and clogged pores” says the New York City dermatologist Dr. Francesca Fusco. This shows how eating processed food damages our skin by clogging our pores causing acne. Therefore, we shouldn’t eat unhealthy food in great quantities but rather eat nutritious food.

Home cooked food can be better for your health if you choose the right ingredients since you are in control of the ingredients. However fast food is more convenient, and easy to access. “There are a few different reasons people might choose to eat fast food. 67% said they eat fast food because it’s convenient. 32% said they eat it because it’s cheap. 31% said they just like eating fast food. 13% said they have a lack of other options. And 6% cited other reasons for eating fast food, such as having coupons or going to eat with friends” (Anne Pilon-journalist). These statistics show how people rely on fast food because of the cheap price and the convenience of it; for instance, someone at work has a lunch break and their home is far from their workplace, but there are many fast food restaurants in that area. The person will most likely buy fast food since it’s very convenient for him/her. Circumstances like these stops a person from eating nutritious home cooked food. However, the person could have brought something healthy from their house but that would require planning beforehand since it’s time consuming. Also if that person wants to maintain a healthy lifestyle, he/she could just buy a salad from a restaurant instead of oily meals.

Deciding what to eat everyday should not be taken lightly because fast food or food containing high amounts of sugar can cause aging. Studies show that people who consume a lot of fast food age faster, also has high levels of cholesterol which could lead to heart diseases. According to American Academy of Dermatology, “Reducing sugar intake may protect elastin and collagen molecules in the skin. Research has shown that a diet high in sugar can damage these molecules, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin”. Hopefully this will change some people mind if not all to choose carefully the next time they want to eat unhealthy. I want all the people to think about the consequences of what they are putting inside their body. This might help them want to eat homemade meals which are full of nutrients instead of that oily sandwich full of cholesterol.

In conclusion, we should look at the bigger picture when deciding what to eat by thinking of the effects of what each food might result in us picking the healthy/homemade food over fast food. We shouldn’t think of vegetables and fruits as tasteless when comparing it with a pizza and burger, however we should look at all the long term effects of each. It’s okay to eat fast food once a while, but it definitely should not be a regular habit because it contributes to many harmful diseases. We shouldn’t be a threat to our own body because at the end of the day, we have control of our body and if anything happens to us that could have been prevented by making smart choices about what we eat, we’ll be responsible and we’ll regret eating fast food on a regular basis.

Eating Home-Cooked Food Is Essential

“You are what you eat” and food intake plays a vital role in health, appearance and fitness of an individual. With the changing times and fast paced lives, few people actually cook food at homes and have regular family meals. Jobs, social lives and busy schedules are deterring more and more women from cooking at home and most families end up eating outside food. Not only does this have a terrible effect on the health of individuals but also the social structure of the family. This paper aims to argue that food must be cooked at home and that eating home cooked food is beneficial not only for maintaining good health but also for bonding the family.

The fast changing world and society have altered the structure of families and their lifestyles. Traditionally, while the men were at work, women stayed back and looked after their homes and cooked the food. Times are now changing and many women have to go to work, with the result that they have very little time for their families and homes. Fast foods and aerated drinks have become a part of the regular life and very little time is spent at the dining tables. This has resulted in terrible negative effects on the health of individuals, especially children. Burgers and fries have penetrated our lives like never before and replaced the more nutritious diets from our menus.

While outside foods may seem to be tempting and convenient to those who do not have the time or desire to cook and eat their meals at home, hygiene and nutrition could be compromised when eating outside foods. These foods rich in fats and other harmful substances and are causing several side effects to the health of individuals in the form of diseases like diabetes, blood pressure and obesity, which have now become common in society.

One of the most primary and important benefits of eating home cooked food is the fact that since the food is prepared personally, we know what has gone to prepare the food. Not only does the consumption of calories, fats and sodium rise dramatically in outside foods, the vegetables required for daily nutritional needs are often missing. Even if veggies are consumed, the conventional preparations are not found at restaurants or food joints. Eating at home also reduces the urge to overeat since the portions are lot bigger at restaurants than at home.

When food is cooked at home, the ingredients which go in the food can be decided by keeping in mind the advantages and disadvantages in mind. for instance, it is necessary to have a balanced meal by including all the vital ingredients to provide the daily allowances of iron, calcium, vitamins, minerals, and all the other nutrients for a healthy life.

On the other hand, eating outside food does not guarantee that all the important nutrients are present in the food. An additional concern in eating outside food is whether the food is fresh and has been cooked appropriately. For instance, due to low turnover, sometimes restaurants and food joints can serve food which has been prepared many days earlier. Not only does this reduce the nutrient levels of the food, the chances of health problems are also increased tremendously. Food poisoning, gastroenteritis and diarrhea are some of the commonly occurring diseases due to food infections.

The most crucial and important function of eating food at home with family members, is the quality time spent with them. Food also serves the social function of uniting the members and eating meals together enables loved ones to be together. Members of the family especially children can be allowed to partake in the planning meals by asking them to help with the little tasks in the kitchen so that they have a sense of belonging and also begin to learn the basics of cooking. Besides, cultural values can also be shared with children and adolescents while preparing meals which can become extremely enjoyable moments for the entire family. Feelings of unity and sharing can be created by all the members sharing the important tasks, which will also serve as crucial unifying factors and ensure that the family members share their views and opinions with one another.

Most importantly, in the current times of high inflation and recession of the economy, cooking food at home can help families to economize on their budget and daily expenses. Buying food from outside is not cheap and definitely costs more than an ordinary home cooked meal. Planning and cooking meals will enable individuals to save on their unnecessary expenses of eating out side foods and add tremendously to the savings of the family.

Thus, it is apparent that eating home cooked food has tremendous benefits and serves numerous functions. Not only does food cooked at home facilitates healthy eating habits, it also serves to unite the family members. Cooking at home also saves money, which can be used for more important needs.

Homemade Food Is Better Than Restaurant Food: Essay

We all are familiar quotation ‘What you eat make you who you are’. It means that food selection is significant in our life as it directly affects our health. Fresh, hygienic, organic, and nutritional food are essential aspects of a healthy life. At home, all family members can prepare and have their food together. Considering these facts, I believe that homemade food is better than restaurant food, so I prefer the former. In addition to these, the price and natural taste of homemade food make us to prefer it over restaurant food.

The first cause of preferring home food is because we can govern the quality of the food that is made at home. High-quality food is important for a healthy life. We are aware of the ingredients and their amount while buying from the market. This gives information about the types of ingredients that we are consuming into the body (‘Argument Essay on Homemade Food’). However, in restaurants, we are unaware of ingredients types and food quality. For example, while preparing chicken curry at home we prefer to use cholesterol-free oil, this helps us to eat the desired quality of food.

The second reason is that the foods we prepare at home are fresh and healthier than those which are supplied in the restaurants. The fried rice we prepared at home is healthier than that is served in the restaurants. This is because at home the fried made from fresh ingredients than that is served in the restaurants.

homemade food essay 50 words

Another reason is that homemade foods are hygienic. At home, we cook food with washed hands in a fresh and clean environment. However, the restaurant owners are business-oriented, they do not care about customer’s hygiene and their health (‘Argument Essay on Homemade Food’). For example, at home, we clean foods and vegetables with clean water. At home, we wash utensils and dishes before serving food family members which maintains hygiene and prevents from diseases. Thus, we can say that hand touching the foods are clean and hygiene at home.

One more reason for preferring homemade food is because we can save money. The prices of food items served in restaurants are three to four times more than that are cooked at home (Lee). For instance, the mushroom soup I order in a restaurant has a price equal to that I spend to make sufficient soup for all my family members. Thus, eating homemade food helps to save money.

Another cause of choosing home food over the restaurant is that we can spend our quality time with our family members. If the food is prepared at home, all the family members get a chance to have their food together. It helps them to interact and get closer to each other. For example, if any family eats food made at home (Lee). Here, children can learn cooking skills from their parents. At lunchtime, children can talk about their day at school and parents can share their day at the office. Parents can guide their children in their studies. Both parents and children get the opportunity to crack jokes and story that creates a pleasing environment in the family. This aid parents to know more about their children and vice versa. Thus, it helps to maintain a healthy relationship with all family members.

Overall, homemade foods are fresh, healthier, and nutritious than that food served in the restaurants. We can afford hygienic food at a reasonable price and have more time to spend with family members at home as compared to restaurants. Therefore, to maintain a healthy life and relation with family I always prefer fresh food made at home.

We usually cook our meals at home, but eating fast food occasionally can be a special treat and is sometimes necessary when we are having an especially busy night. Fast foods are easy to acquire, taste delicous, satisfy hunger, and are relatively low in cost. The time-consuming homemade meal is featured less than ever on American dinner tables.…

How To Write A Persuasive Essay On Home Food Vs Fast Food

Homemade food is often treated as a privilege. Low cost of fast food and its nutrition value become a solution for many families who have neither time not money to cook at home. Warnings that fast food is not healthy do not stop Americans who treat it as an essential part of their daily diet. As a result, the prevalence of obese and overweight people plummets. If we look at what is behind attractive pricing strategies and delicious tastes offered at fast food chains, all facts support the idea that homemade food is a better choice. The articles _Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?_ by Mark Bittman and _Fast Food Versus Slow Food_ by Nancy Folbre provide enough facts to motivate people to cook at home. Out of these two articles, Folbre 's specific approach to argumentation makes her writing extremely persuasive and logical advocating cooking at home.…

Fast Food Argument

Fast food is unhealthy; leads to obesity and disease, but the convenience and addictiveness of it contributes to the laziness of the general population. Most people eat fast food for the lack of time then having prepare a decent meal. It seems as though there is a fast food restaurant on every street corner while driving home. The general population oversees the fact that eating nothing but these greasy foods will attribute to weight gain. Fast food is addictive for the convenience of it and in which it tastes so good. Additionally, the variety of fast food restaurants provides timely manners for people with different work hours; compared to whom works a normal nine to five job. For instance, people try dieting and then will starve their body by not eating anything at all or just salads that will go nowhere fast. The human body needs heavy calories to burn off and produce healthy enzymes and glycogen. Specifically, this helps produce bigger muscles and thicker bone density. Eating nothing at all will still not help a person get healthier because the human brain needs carbohydrates and proteins to function properly. Naturally, eating too much fast food leads to obesity which leads to diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure; which then leads to laziness. Laziness is one of the biggest factors to weight gain. What a vicious circle this is; being too tired to cook after working all day, the convenience of fast food then laziness and furthermore, the unnecessary results of obesity and…

Quick and easy foods are also cheap, which appeals to so many individuals. You can order dollar cheeseburgers, dollar sodas and supersize items for just pennies. Advantages and Health Benefits of Homemade Food

by Terry R.

It is not always easy to prepare all your meals at home due to the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I know that most people would love to cook at home but sometimes, the time isn't just there.

Many others, on the other hand, doesn't care about preparing and eating at home because they have not taken time to understand the advantages and health benefits of homemade foods.

Homemade foods save money

Homemade foods saves time, it keeps a family together, helps to improve cooking skills, healthy ingredients and methods, you can avoid sensitive or allergic foods, controlling the quantity of food, encourages a balanced diet, save you from food poisoning, avoiding diseases, help you to cultivate healthy eating habits, comfortable eating time.

To tell you the truth, I have discovered that no matter how fanciful the foods of a world-class hotel, restaurant or eatery seem, preparing your meals by yourself at home is always the best option if you want to live long and healthy.  That is why I want to use this article to point out that there are many advantages and health benefits of eating homemade foods.

Advantages of Homemade Foods:

Advantages of Homemade Foods:

Are you aware that you can save a lot of money if you eat homemade foods instead of visiting the restaurant or the market for processed foods? Always remember that the money you pay for any plate of food in a restaurant covers both the food and the operational costs of the business.

All those staffs, the spacious seating, the water, lights, etc. need maintenance, and they are all part of what you pay for in a plate of food. Even the processed food, the frozen foods you buy at the grocery store are all costlier than their worth.

So, instead of spending more money on eating outing outside, focus on homemade foods and save your extra cash. All you will do is to create a meal plan that will cover many days, make a comprehensive grocery list that you can maintain and save leftovers daily in your refrigerator.

Advantages of Homemade Foods:

This idea may sound ridiculous because many people are of the opinion that grabbing a bite at the restaurant is always faster when they are on a tight schedule. In reality, there are many homemade foods you can prepare in just 20 minutes and still enjoy it.

One of the advantages of cooking and eating at home is that your family will be together and learn how to share. During family meals, everybody gets the chance to discuss their day, their funny escapades, etc.

Also, families that sit down together and eat homemade foods produce sensitive and smart children who will not practice substance abuse, depression or inferiority complex.

When you spend little time each day preparing all kinds of foods for yourself or the family, your cooking skills will improve dramatically. When it comes to cooking, the adage that "practice makes perfect" applies. You can start from simple meals and move on to more expansive delicacies, and with time and constant practice, you will cook better than most chefs.

Apart from the advantages of homemade foods, there are many health benefits which you will get.

Health Benefits of Homemade Foods:

Many of the foods you eat in restaurants or the ones you buy from the supermarkets contain a lot of fats, sugar, and salt. When you want to prepare your meal at home, you will be in control of what to use and whatnots. It will be easy to remove all those ingredients that are neither necessary nor healthy because you know what your body needs.

Also, instead of following unhealthy methods of cooking, you can cook in different patterns that will help your ingredients to retain their nutrients. For instance, you can use olive oil for frying instead of butter or other unhealthy oils.

So many people have one food allergy or the other. Some people experience rashes, bloating, swelling, choking, when they eat a particular kind of food. If you are cooking for yourself or the family, you can control what everybody eats to prevent health hazards like allergic reactions or fainting.

Let's say you want to maintain a particular body weight at all times, but you like eating at the restaurant. Whether you want to or not, the temptation of finishing the portion they offer you will be greater than your desire to eat less. The best thing is to eat at home so that you can control the quantity of your food intake.

Health Benefits of Homemade Foods:

If you are cooking at home, you have the power to choose meals that will contain the six classes of food in the right ration. It is common knowledge the food people buy at the fast food or restaurants contain more sodium, fats, sugars, carbohydrates than homemade foods.

So instead of eating foods that have zero nutritional value, spend a little time at home and prepare a healthy and balanced diet for a longer life.

Instead of always fretting whenever you feel uncomfortable after eating at the restaurant, you can depend on homemade foods for your peace of mind. Many people suffer from food poisoning every day due to the constant eating of different ingredients at the fast foods and restaurants. So instead of increasing the statistics, eat more of homemade foods.

When you cook and eat homemade foods, you can be sure that your kitchen is clean to prevent germs and bacteria from passing to you through the foods you eat. Sometimes, the roadside food vendors you patronize may not follow the proper regulations about their cooking environment.

So instead of exposing your life to diseases, spend time at home and prepare your foods.

Do you know that when you want to maintain a healthy lifestyle, one area you must include for a better result is your eating habit?  So many people who engage in weight loss programs often fail along the way because they have unhealthy eating habits.

When you find it difficult to control what you eat, the quantity you eat and the time you eat, your life will be in trouble. When you patronize homemade foods, you will discover many healthy recipes, learn about many types of food, create a meal plan and stick to the plan without deviation.

All those snacking and unhealthy drinking which defines your daily life will be a thing of the past.

When you eat homemade foods, you can take time to savor the meal without wondering if you are wasting time or if your table manners are under observation in a restaurant. Also, taking time to chew your foods properly makes digestion easier and faster. Therefore, cook and eat at home because it is healthy.

I know that you may think that there is no time to focus on homemade foods every day. It may not be easy at first but when you remember the things you stand to gain if you eat homemade foods, the motivation and energy to try will be there.

Always remember the saying that "if you don't eat your food like drugs, you will eat drugs like food one day" Don't overlook the advantages and health benefits of eating homemade food if you want to live long and strong.

For the first week of the March Culinary Countdown , we looked into the benefits of cooking at home with dietitian Ben Atkinson , who manages Harborview Medical Center’s outpatient nutrition, informatics, and wellness programs in the Nutrition and Foodservices department.

1. Saves money

Eating homemade foods is usually much cheaper than eating at a restaurant or buying processed foods from the market.

Ben’s advice: “When we eat at a restaurant, we pay for not only the food, but also the costs of running that business. The lights, the water, the building, and the staff — in addition to the meal we are eating. The same goes for the pre-made or frozen meals at grocery stores.”

Here are some additional ways Ben suggests to save money:

It might seem like grabbing something to eat at the local supermarket or driving to get take-out at the closest restaurant might be a quick solution when you’re in a hurry. In reality, many times it can be much faster to cook something at home, especially when you plan ahead. There are so many meals that can be made in less than 30 minutes. And if you choose a more complex recipe, you can always cook in bulk and eat the surplus later in the week or freeze it.

3. Healthier ingredients

Many commercially prepared foods are high in fat, salt, and sugar. When we prepare our own food, we know exactly which ingredients and how much of each are going into our food.

Ben’s advice: “When we cook at home, we are in control. McDonald’s fries have 19 ingredients. We can make them at home with far less — and they will taste just as good. A favorite at my house is potatoes cut into wedges, olive oil, salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper. Put these in a Ziploc bag to mix together. Then place in the oven on a pan for about 30 minutes at 400 F. It’s only five ingredients, and tastes fabulous.”

4. Avoid food allergies and sensitivities

Preparing your food at home can be especially beneficial if you or a family member has a food allergy. Because you are in control in your own kitchen, you can reduce the risk of an allergic reaction.

5. Portion control

Many restaurants and fast food joints offer portions that are much larger than necessary. And the problem is, when food is in front of you, chances are you’ll eat it. When you dine in, you can regulate the amount of food served for dinner, eliminating unnecessary temptation.

6. Brings family together

Eating at home gives the entire family time to talk about their day.

Ben’s advice: “Studies show that when we eat together, our kids and family are much healthier. Eating together is linked to less obesity, kids doing better in school, and less substance abuse within the family.”

Involving your children in food preparation (maybe by asking them to read the recipe out loud or mix ingredients) is not only a fun thing to do, but also a great way to teach them healthy eating habits.

Thanks to Ben for filling us in on the benefits of cooking at home! Here are seven recipes that you could try this week…

Mini Frittatas with Spinach and Cheese

FullSizeRender

In Italy we normally eat frittata for lunch or dinner, but these would be equally delicious for breakfast. The great thing about these frittatas is that they can be made in advance; just reheat in the microwave or eat at room temperature for a quick and healthy go-to meal.

Ben’s advice: “You probably saw the recent scientific advice for the upcoming Dietary Guidelines 2015 revision—the one that said eggs weren’t bad for your health. Well, it’s true. Besides their great amount of protein, eggs have healthy omega-3 fats. They are also a nice source of Vitamin B12 for people who don’t eat meat. These frittatas are the rare breakfast menu item that contains large amounts of vegetables, too. Pair them with a slice of whole-grain toast or a piece of fresh fruit, and you’ve got a delicious and balanced meal.

Ingredients for 4 people: Nonstick vegetable oil cooking spray 2 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 1 large leek, whites and tender green parts halved, thinly sliced, and washed well 1 lb. spinach, tough stems removed and rinsed well 6 eggs 1 cup ricotta 1/3 cup grated Swiss cheese 1/3 cup grated Parmigiano Reggiano cheese Salt and freshly ground pepper

I love spinach, but feel free to experiment with your favorite ingredients.

Spaghetti al Pesto

Food 032

This is my family’s pesto recipe. Why buy store-bought pesto when you can have superior results by making it yourself? Make a bigger batch during summer months when basil is in season and freeze it in small containers to have pesto year-round. It’s delicious on pasta, pizza, and sandwiches.

Ben’s advice: “Pasta often gets a bad rep, which is a shame. It’s relatively inexpensive and really versatile. It’s also a great source of energy for athletes. The problem that most of us have is making pasta our entire meal. Pair it with seasonal vegetables and a few slices of fruit, and you have an excellent and complete meal. Pesto has a lot of good nutrients. The combination of pine nuts and olive oil provide healthy fats to help you live a long and healthy life.”

Ingredients for 4 people: 1 lb. spaghetti 2 cloves of garlic, peeled 2 cups basil leaves, packed 2 Tbsp. pine nuts 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/3 cup freshly grated Parmigiano Reggiano cheese 2 Tbsp. freshly grated Pecorino cheese Salt and pepper to taste

Gnocchi with Fresh Tomato Sauce

FullSizeRender[1]

Homemade tomato sauce is so much tastier and healthier than its store-bought counterpart. Make a big batch of fresh tomato sauce — especially July through October when tomatoes are in season — and freeze. Gnocchi takes literally two minutes to cook and is perfect for days when you’re pressed for time.

Ben’s advice: “Homemade tomato sauce and freshly cooked pasta is an unbeatable combination. It’s also great for your health. Gnocchi is made from potatoes, which are a fantastic source of potassium, and one of the few ways to get Vitamin C in the winter from local produce. And many observational studies link reductions in cancer and heart disease occurrence with eating more tomatoes. When you cook tomatoes, you soften the cell walls inside the tomato, which allows you to get more of the beneficial nutrients into your body. Tomatoes and potatoes FTW (that’s ‘for the win’, for you kids out there!).”

Ingredients for 4 people: 2 lb. gnocchi 2 lb. fresh tomatoes 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil salt 5 or 6 basil leaves Parmigiano Reggiano to taste

Tuna with Beans Salad

tuna

This salad takes under 10 minutes to make and uses ingredients I usually keep in my pantry, so it’s perfect for those days when you have no time to plan! (Make sure you use tuna canned in olive oil instead of water.)

Ben’s advice: “We all know that tuna is great for our health, with its healthful omega-3 fats. But the beans in this recipe are also terrific for our bodies. They contain carbohydrates, fiber, and protein — so they’ll give you energy, improve your digestion, and help maintain your muscles. Plus, at about $1 per 16-ounce can, they are easy on your budget.”

Ingredients for 4 people: 2 cups canned cannellini beans, washed and drained 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil 1 small red onion, finely sliced 2 Tbsp. finely chopped parsley 3 5-oz. cans of tuna in olive oil, drained

Spinach Salad with Pears, Walnuts, and Gorgonzola

Food 042

In Italy, we eat this salad as a side dish but it can very easily become a main dish when you add a couple slices of grilled bread or grilled chicken breast.

Ben’s advice: “Did you know that spinach is grown almost the entire year in Washington, and that our state produces most of the nation’s spinach seeds? That means that you’re regularly eating local spinach, fresh from the farm. Add some local pears from this salad, and you’ve got a great tasting, fresh salad waiting for you and your family.”

Ingredients for 4 people: baby spinach pears walnuts crumbled Gorgonzola cheese 3 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil 2 Tbsp. red wine vinegar salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

Beef Strips over Arugula with cherry tomatoes and shaved Parmigiano Reggiano

P1070234-re

This is one of my favorite meat dishes. It is extremely easy to make, tastes great, and  looks beautiful.

Ben’s advice: “This can be great as a lunch salad if you have leftovers, too. It’s visually appealing with the bright green arugula, brown and red steak, and deep red tomatoes. The great colors in this salad mean that it is a complete meal, containing many of the nutrients our bodies need to work and be active all day.”

Ingredients for 4 people: 1 lb. boneless top sirloin steak, cut crosswise into very thin slices 5 oz. arugula shaved Parmigiano Reggiano cheese to taste 12 oz. cherry tomatoes, halved 2 garlic cloves, peeled and smashed 3 large shallots 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Light Eggplant Parmigiana

Light Eggplant Parmimgiana

This much healthier version of traditional Parmigiana uses grilled instead of fried eggplant. The best way to enjoy Eggplant Parmigiana is to make it the day before, and let the flavors develop.

Ben’s advice: “The reason that many Italian dishes get a bad reputation is because of their large amount of carbohydrates or cheese. But remember, this should not be the only item on your plate. It is perfectly healthful as part of your meal. There are really no empty calories (food that has no nutritional benefit) in this recipe. The cheese is a great source of calcium and protein; the eggplant, tomatoes, and other vegetables provide us with huge amounts of vitamins and minerals and fiber; and the olive oil is notably great for us. Pair this dish with a large handful of fresh green beans sautéed in the same pan, or a few slices of Washington-grown apples, and your meal will be healthier than anybody else’s in town.”

Ingredients for 4 people: 3 lb. eggplants 1 28 oz. can crushed tomatoes 2 garlic cloves 1 8 oz. mozzarella, cut into small cubes 1 cup of freshly grated Parmigiano Reggiano basil leaves extra-virgin olive oil salt and pepper

I hope you enjoy cooking more often this week. Share pics of these meals or your own recipes in the private  Eating Well group for a chance to win a Whole U apron!

I am looking forward to some recipes that do not include dairy or rely mainly on carbs/protein for their bulk. My anti-inflammatory approach to eating emphasizes fruits and vegetables (preferably 2/3 of most meals). Eggs and veggies are my breakfast mainstay – sans dairy.

Yum, but out of all of the recipes, I would only be able to eat one :-(. All with the exception of the tuna dish and the spinach salad had parmesan cheese in them – the spinach salad has walnuts, which I’m allergic to and Parmesan, even though I, too am Italian and love the flavor of Parmesan, gives me migraines. Hope there will be some recipes next time that I can eat.

On March 10, 2015 at 4:58 PM, Chiara said:

Hi! I’m sorry to hear you can’t eat Parmesan! A few of the recipes will work just as well if you don’t include it. The beef strips salad, the gnocchi and the mini-frittatas don’t really require Parmesan. They will taste just as good without!

It would be helpful if the recipes could include nutrition facts. We have a family member with Hypertension and must watch sodium consumption and also is gluten sensitive. Some things are easy to substitute low sodium items I cook fresh tomatoes instead of using canned. It does make cooking a challenge. any suggestions?

On March 10, 2015 at 5:22 PM, Chiara said:

Hi Lori, you are right. Choosing fresh or frozen instead of canned items is a great way to limit your sodium intake. A great way to introduce additional flavor to your foods is to use herbs and spices. They will add flavor without the extra sodium. We’ll look into adding nutritional facts next time we do a challenge like this. Thanks for your input!

I think all these recipes are highly adaptable–for instance if you can’t eat cheese, it’s easily left out without feeling like you’re missing anything.

I’m wondering what to replace the red onion with in the tuna dish though; any raw onions give hubby some serious heartburn. Only thing I can think of so far is capers (which I may throw in regardless), but I definitely want something that can help stand in place of that excellent bite and crunch onions provide… what do you think?

On March 10, 2015 at 5:27 PM, Chiara said:

Hi Hannah, how about sliced radishes? They definitely don’t have the same flavor as onions, but they do have that nice bite and crunchiness you are looking for.

Love the pictures and recipes. As mentioned above, you can substitute to fit your diet. I avoid gluten and dairy, so would sub brown rice spaghetti and skip the cheese. Still yummy! Also, you can copy and paste the individual recipes (with or without pictures) into ‘Word’ for printing…
