Vincent Van Gogh was a very famous painter that still inspires many people today. He was one of the most influential artists in western art. In just over a decade, he created around 2,100 artworks. While Van Gogh seems like a super popular guy, he actually struggled with mental illness and remained poor throughout his life. He was not very famous until after his death, however, he experienced many different things in his life.
Vincent Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, in Brabant, Netherlands. He was the oldest of six children and his dad was a protestant pastor. He grew up in a small village in the Southern Netherlands. Around age 20, he started to work for the government and held a position in London and Paris. Then, he got inspired by artists like Rembrandt. Later, he was rejected by a London girl and became depressed. He went through many different jobs, trying to find what he was good at. For example, he practiced theology and then went into the missions field. However, he got sent back because the church did not like how he was teaching. After, he was frustrated that he was not allowed to talk about what he believed. By being sent home, he started to focus on humanity in art and how whatever you believe in is ok. Then, he became a language teacher. Next, he was a bookseller and sold letters. The letters of Vincent Van Gogh are a collection of 903 surviving letters that he wrote or received. In conclusion, Vincent Van Gogh was a determined man and kept finding ways to do what he loved.

For example, it is believed that his famous painting Starry Nights is from the viewpoint of an asylum. His artwork started to represent how he acted and felt.
Vincent Van Gogh is an artist that still influences many people for over a century. He is a good example of never giving up. He kept getting fired and moved from job to job. Vincent van Gogh, the eldest son of a Dutch Reformed minister and a bookseller’s daughter, pursued various vocations, including that of an art dealer and clergyman, before deciding to become an artist at the age of twenty-seven. Over the course of his decade-long career (1880–90), he produced nearly 900 paintings and more than 1,100 works on paper. Ironically, in 1890, he modestly assessed his artistic legacy as of “very secondary” importance.
Largely self-taught, Van Gogh gained his footing as an artist by zealously copying prints and studying nineteenth-century drawing manuals and lesson books, such as Charles Bargue’s Exercises au fusain and cours de dessin . He felt that it was necessary to master black and white before working with color, and first concentrated on learning the rudiments of figure drawing and rendering landscapes in correct perspective. In 1882, he moved from his parents’ home in Etten to the Hague, where he received some formal instruction from his cousin, Anton Mauve, a leading Hague School artist. That same year, he executed his first independent works in watercolor and ventured into oil painting; he also enjoyed his first earnings as an artist: his uncle, the art dealer Cornelis Marinus van Gogh, commissioned two sets of drawings of Hague townscapes for which Van Gogh chose to depict such everyday sites as views of the railway station, gasworks, and nursery gardens ( 1972.118.281 ).
Van Gogh’s admiration for the Barbizon artists, in particular Jean-François Millet, influenced his decision to paint rural life. In the winter of 1884–85, while living with his parents in Nuenen, he painted more than forty studies of peasant heads, which culminated in his first multifigured, large-scale composition ( The Potato Eaters , Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam); in this gritty portrayal of a peasant family at mealtime, Van Gogh wrote that he sought to express that they “have tilled the earth themselves with the same hands they are putting in the dish.” Its dark palette and coarse application of paint typify works from the artist’s Nuenen period ( 67.187.70b ; 1984.393 ).
Interested in honing his skills as a figure painter, Van Gogh left the Netherlands in late 1885 to study at the Antwerp Academy in Belgium. Three months later, he departed for Paris, where he lived with his brother Theo, an art dealer with the firm of Boussod, Valadon et Cie, and for a time attended classes at Fernand Cormon’s studio. Van Gogh’s style underwent a major transformation during his two-year stay in Paris (February 1886–February 1888). There he saw the work of the Impressionists first-hand and also witnessed the latest innovations by the Neo-Impressionists Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. In response, Van Gogh lightened his palette and experimented with the broken brushstrokes of the Impressionists as well as the pointillist touch of the Neo-Impressionists, as evidenced in the handling of his Self-Portrait with a Straw Hat ( 67.187.70a ), which was painted in the summer of 1887 on the reverse of an earlier peasant study ( 67.187.70b ). In Paris, he executed more than twenty self-portraits that reflect his ongoing exploration of complementary color contrasts and a bolder style.
In February 1888, Van Gogh departed Paris for the south of France, hoping to establish a community of artists in Arles. Captivated by the clarity of light and the vibrant colors of the Provençal spring, Van Gogh produced fourteen paintings of orchards in less than a month, painting outdoors and varying his style and technique. The composition and calligraphic handling of The Flowering Orchard ( 56.13 ) suggest the influence of Japanese prints , which Van Gogh collected. The artist’s debt to ukiyo-e prints is also apparent in the reed pen drawings he made in Arles, distinguished by their great verve and linear invention ( 48.190.1 ). In August, he painted the still lifes Oleanders ( 62.24 ) and Shoes ( 1992.374 ); each work resonates with the artist’s personal symbolism. For Van Gogh, oleanders were joyous and life-affirming (much like the sunflower); he reinforced their significance with the compositional prominence accorded to Émile Zola’s 1884 novel La joie de vivre . The still life of unlaced shoes, which Van Gogh had apparently hung in Paul Gauguin ‘s “yellow room” at Arles, suggested, to Gauguin, the artist himself—he saw them as emblematic of Van Gogh’s itinerant existence.
Gauguin joined Van Gogh in Arles in October and abruptly departed in late December 1888, a move precipitated by Van Gogh’s breakdown, during which he cut off part of his left ear with a razor. Upon his return from the hospital in January, he resumed working on a portrait of the wife of the postmaster Joseph Roulin; although he painted all the members of the Roulin family, Van Gogh produced five versions of Madame Roulin as La Berceuse , shown holding the rope that rocks her newborn daughter’s cradle ( 1996.435 ). He envisioned her portrait as the central panel of a triptych, flanked by paintings of sunflowers. For Van Gogh, her image transcended portraiture, symbolically resonating as a modern Madonna; of its palette, which ranges from ocher to vermilion and malachite, Van Gogh expressed his desire that it “sing a lullaby with color,” underscoring the expressive role of color in his art.
Fearing another breakdown, Van Gogh voluntarily entered the asylum at nearby Saint-Rémy in May 1889, where, over the course of the next year, he painted some 150 canvases. His initial confinement to the grounds of the hospital is reflected in his imagery, from his depictions of its corridors ( 48.190.2 ) to the irises and lilacs of its walled garden, visible from the window of the spare room he was allotted to use as a studio. Venturing beyond the grounds of the hospital, he painted the surrounding countryside, devoting series to its olive groves ( 1998.325.1 ) and cypresses, which he saw as characteristic of Provence. In June, he produced two paintings of cypresses, rendered in thick, impastoed layers of paint ( 49.30 ; Cypresses , Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo), likening the form of a cypress to an Egyptian obelisk in a letter to his brother Theo. These evocative trees figure prominently in a landscape, produced the same month ( 1993.132 ). Van Gogh regarded this work, with its sun-drenched wheat field undulating in the wind, as one of his “best” summer canvases. At Saint-Rémy, he also painted copies of works by such artists as Delacroix, Rembrandt , and Millet, using black-and-white photographs and prints. In fall and winter 1889–90, he executed twenty-one copies after Millet ( 64.165.2 ); he described his copies as “interpretations” or “translations,” comparing his role as an artist to that of a musician playing music written by another composer. During his last week at the asylum, he extended his repertoire of still life by painting four bouquets of Irises ( 58.187 ) and Roses ( 1993.400.5 ) as a final series comparable to the sunflower decoration he made earlier in Arles.
After a year at Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh left, in May 1890, to settle in Auvers-sur-Oise, where he was near his brother Theo in Paris and under the care of Dr. Paul Gachet, a homeopathic physician and amateur painter. In just over two months, Van Gogh averaged a painting a day; however, on July 27, 1890, he shot himself in the chest in a wheat field; he died two days later. His artistic legacy is preserved in the paintings and drawings he left behind, as well as in his voluminous correspondence, primarily with Theo, which lays bare his working methods and artistic intentions and serves as a reminder of his brother’s pivotal role as a mainstay of support throughout his career.
By the time of his death in 1890, Van Gogh’s work had begun to attract critical attention. His paintings were featured at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris between 1888 and 1890 and with Les XX in Brussels in 1890. As Gauguin wrote to him, his recent works, on view at the Indépendants in Paris, were regarded by many artists as “the most remarkable” in the show; and one of his paintings sold from the 1890 exhibition in Brussels. In January 1890, the critic Albert Aurier published the first full-length article on Van Gogh, aligning his art with the nascent Symbolist movement and highlighting the originality and intensity of his artistic vision. By the outbreak of World War I, with the discovery of his genius by the Fauves and German Expressionists, Vincent van Gogh had already come to be regarded as a vanguard figure in the history of modern art.

Unfortunately, despite the increasing complication, delicacy, and quality of Van Gogh's masterworks, he became increasingly mentally unstable and off-balanced. Van Gogh had a terrible nervous breakdown in late 1888 and was forced to enter a hospital in order to recuperate from its debilitating effects. Subsequently, he was struck by terrible seizures and continuing mental difficulties. This was not to be the only time he was interred for his increasing psychological and physical problems, and he was placed in hospitals in Arles, Saint-Remy, and Auvers-sur-Oise. He was in and out of these hospitals until his death . Van Gogh continued to paint throughout his mental difficulties, however, and in 1890 he had a show in which he sold his first painting. That such a great master sold so little of his work during his own lifetime is one of the greatest tragedies in the history of the arts. Unfortunately, Van Gogh was not able to triumph over his own psychological problems, and on July 29, 1890, Van Gogh died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Certainly, Van Gogh's biography makes for an interesting read, and the torturous ups and downs of his life, although painful for him, have not hurt his position in the eyes of his posterity. Indeed, Van Gogh's very madness seems inextricably linked to his deeply idiosyncratic and unique vision, and it is for this vision that he is ultimately is famous. Many have noted that the Van Gogh scholars tend to discuss the link between his genius and his madness when discussion his work: The artist Van Gogh has become like a site where discourses on Madness and creativity converge. Madness and creative genius, both sadly constructed as extreme, alienated, and aberrant kinds of behavior, are mapped onto Van Gogh, rendering him the 'mad artist' and the subject of a study of creativity as a kind of abnormal psychological phenomenon. Van Gogh himself referred to the " artist's madness' (LTR 574) eliding his illness and professional identity into a cultural construction. At the risk of merely adding to the discourse on the connection between Van Gogh's and creative vision, it appears that the much discussed connection here is much-discussed for a reason. Van Gogh's uniqueness lays not so much in a purely technical innovation like Seurat's pointillism or Kandinsky's abstraction. Neither is it simply his brushwork, color, or subject matter. While all of these are important elements and are intriguing to discuss in their own right, the pervading sense that a viewer receives of a Van Gogh is that his painting make the world somehow "strange." It is his artistic vision, his ability to "see" colors, textures, and shapes that seem to call into question the validity and reality of the surrounding world that makes his voice so unique and strong. Considering his well-documented mental troubles, his epilepsy, and his possible hallucination, it is difficult not to tie this radical, unique, and strange vision of reality in with his madness. Certainly, the concept of the artists as an almost insane visionary is not a new, nor was it a new one at the time of Van Gogh. Since the romantics the idea that a true and deep artistic vision might have a spiritual otherworldly aura had circulated as a popular myth and as a common literary device. For Van Gogh, however, this sense of an almost ethereal vision seems central to his work, and though it evolved, it remains a constant influence throughout. Even in Neuen, Van Gogh's unique painterly vision became clear. In this impoverished town, Van Gogh used the landscape and the people as subjects, but beneath them lay a vision that seemed to tell of a reality beyond their physical hardships. Van Gogh's painting from this era The Potato Eaters, displays the ability of his vision to render a scene truly unique. In his description of the painting's history, Louis van Tilborgh discusses the painting essential aim: His overriding aim was to express the human spirit.... In April of 1885, Vincent van Gogh produced his famous art piece called, “The Potato Eaters” but of course at the time Vincent hadn’t realized what he had created, would soon be loved and admired by millions of people.
Their friendship was all and well until Vincent became depressed and started to build arguments. In one argument between the two, Vincent took a razor and cut off his left ear and went to a brothel where he proposed his ear to a prostitute. After the incident of his ear, Vincent van Gogh continued to have several breakdowns causing him to get hospitalized and even seek help in an asylum.
After seeking help at the asylum, Vincent moved back with his brother and had homeopathic treatment where a doctor, Paul Gachet, was taking care of him every day. He was stable throughout June and July of 1890, but around the end of July, Vincent van Gogh took his supplies to the field and committed suicide.
During his years of living with his parents, Vincent van Gogh painted many peasant families living in poverty. One of his famous paintings called “The Potato Eaters” originated from that passion. In one of his letters he explains that peasant people are and who he perceived to be “as closer to nature than other people.” He observed a particular poor family and saw that the point is, “that these people eating potatoes by the light of their lamp, have dug the earth with the self-same hands they are now putting into their dish, and it thus suggests manual labor and a meal honestly earned.” This was a way for him to understand the relationship between a rural life and the cycles of nature. After showing locals and “civilized people” his artwork, many criticized the painting and disliked it.
However, van Gogh pointed out that it wasn’t meant for them to like it, it was meant for them to see and admire how down to earth these people are. The family in the painting are gathered around a squared table eating potatoes from a big plate as what seems to be lady pouring coffee into 5 cups. To create this one of a kind painting, he used thick layers of paint and vivid colors to make the sky pop out more and create that illusion of the sky moving. The stars are seen to be a burst of yellow energy that shift with the curling wind. He used thick brush strokes to create a rough, popping, and dramatic effect. His medium for this painting is oil on a canvas. His color palate consisted of vibrant blue, yellow, green, and black hues. The black hues can kind of reflect the feeling of being sad, depressed, and lonely. The light that shines from the moon and stars reflect the hope and energy he found in certain things. This painting is one of a kind for the fact that Vincent van Gogh was used to painting peasant families/ people, flowers, landscapes of fields, and random items like a chair, his room in Paris, etc. This painting however, was the one with the most vibrant colors and range of colors, which is why it was it different and famous.
I chose Vincent van Gogh as one of the important artists in humanities because I always admired “Starry Night” and his unique background. Unlike many other famous artists like Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci, Vincent van Gogh primarily focused his artwork on impasto and postimpressionism. His work is influenced on naturalistic and realistic unlike many artists who get influenced by Greek mythology and the Renaissance period. However, my main attraction to this artist is because of his masterpiece “Starry Night.” I remember looking at this painting and loving the color palate that the artist used, the texture it creates, the movement the sky creates (almost like a dream), the strokes from the brushes indicating each movement that is made on purpose and not on accident, the way the moon shines down on a dark set of houses, and the greenery that is displayed amongst the sky and the houses. I think it is safe to say van Gogh is my favorite artist. I admired his admiration on peasant people and their relationship with realism and naturalism compared to civilized people he was used to seeing or used to know. His background of work and studies is more than I anticipated he would do. It shocked me to know he was trying to be a minister and did missionaries since he is well known for his depression and absurd actions, like cutting his ear off and offering it to a prostitute. In conclusion, I chose Vincent van Gogh because he is mainly a painter with an ordinary background and sees the truth in the world despite his epileptic episodes.

He uses a style called Impasto.It is a very thick texture of paint that uses broken brush stoked to show the strong emotions that Van Gogh have. The artwork that was done by Van Gogh really shows the emotional feelings that Van Gogh has inside of him. His painting always shows how depressing Van Gogh was.
His painting will never feel comfortable. It will always seem depress. He was always depressed, nothing good would ever happen to him. He has tried so many type of work but art was the only thing he could do best.

The painter didn;t seem very happy as he was painting. The color background made the vase of flower stands out more.
Realism of form was abandoned more and more, and color effects were intensified. He attempted to reproduce what he thought. This work of art has been very well organized. Just by the colors that Van Gogh uses, it can show most of his mind. It really brings it out.
It shows that the happiness in Van Gogh;s life is gone. The yellow flower symbolizes happiness and it fell off. The background is made up of Complentary color, which is red and green.

Vincent Van Gogh was born in 1853 at the town of GrootZndut, in Holland.He passed away in 1890.He was known to be a great and talented artist.I’m not really familiar with Van Gogh’s work, but there is this one piece of work of his that stands out to me.This piece of work is called ” The Starry Night.”It was an oil on canvas done in 1889.
This painting now sits at The Museum of Modern Art, in New York.You see a brightly colored landscape with a tree, a village, a church, and a turbulent sky in this masterpiece. This square painting has a lot of texture and value.The painting is simple like a cartoon like image and it’s feature’s can be instantly recognizable.The color blue was used a lot in his painting.The blue really enhanced the scene of the sky.The yellow was used to bring out the stars in the painting.I really like the way Van Gogh used whirlpool like lines to create this crazy sky. The definition of star is a large celestial body composed of gravitationally contained of hot gases emitting electromagnetic radiation, especially light, as a result of nuclear reactions inside the star.All stars probably vary slightly in their brightness on a more less periodic basis. I’m really not sure what Van Gogh is trying to portray in this piece of work.
Van Gogh was a tormented, intense, and mystical man.I’m sure some of the torment, and a kind of madness of his was built into this painting.I think Van Gogh brought his work a whole lot of experiences and emotions.When I look at this painting I get a sense of energy, happiness, and exuberance.It looks like a hot summer night.It makes me want to go put on a pair of shorts and run out side and catch fireflies like I did when I was little during summer night’s.It also reminds me of the time when I’d go swimming at night time at the neighbors house.This painting can bring a lot of memories to mind.
Wheat Field with Crows, by Vincent Van Gogh, oil on canvas, 50.5 x 103.0 cm, 1890, Auvers-sur-Oise. It is a horizontal rectangle with the sides approximately in the ratio 1:2 and is a landscape. The wheat field takes up about 60% of the painting, including the pathways, as opposed to the stormy night sky, which takes up about 40 % of the canvas. Out of the 60% the actual wheat field takes about 40 % of the canvas. The rest are the green pathways. About 5% of the canvas is taken up by the flying crows, which are quite dominant in this piece of work. The wheat field appears to be divided into two by a pathway and there is approximately the same amount of wheat on either sides of the path. The crows, although centralized, move from left-middle to the top right corner of the canvas, increasing in number as you move to the right.
Wheat Field with Crows basically consists of paths, a wheat field, a stormy sky and dominating the canvas are the crows. The paths are comprised of three sets: one in the middle, winding towards the horizon, and two in each foreground corner on either side. The paths could have a symbolic interpretation, but it is hard to interpret what direction the paths follow. The path on the left foreground appears to be coming towards the viewer while no sense can be made of the path on the right corner. The path in the middle appears to be drawn towards the horizon. This interpretation is supported by the fact that the wheat fields also seem to be moving from left to right, the brush strokes directing the wheat towards the top right corner. This also suggests the direction of the storm, which is a trademark of Van Gogh’s work.
The most powerful image within Wheat Field with Crows, are the crows themselves. The flock of crows again stimulates a lot symbolic interpretation. People argue that the flock is in fact moving towards the viewer and hence the work becomes more foreboding.
Vincent Van Gogh’s Life Essay
Vincent Van Gogh was born in 1853 in Groot-Zundert, which is located in the Netherlands, and died in 1890 at the tender age of 37. This story details his lack of acceptance in society during this period, in addition to how his paintings affected modern-day society, the critics, and the censorship of art. Van Gogh’s father was a Dutch protestant minister. In addition to Vincent, his father had other children: Anna, Willamina, and Theo, who was very close to Vincent.Theo went on to become a very successful art dealer through the acquisition and sale of impressionist paintings. Eventually, his father saved up enough to send his children to boarding school but it wasn’t right environment for the young children. The children were forced to endure cold showers, lack of proper nutrition, in addition to not being able to form a bond with the other students. At the age of 15, Vincent was no longer interested in the mundane topics of school and withdrew from it. He wanted to follow his passion of painting, and he had a keen eye for color.
From the early 1880s on, van Gogh was supported by his brother Théo, who was an art dealer in Paris who was financially backing Vincent. He corresponded frequently with Théo for most of his life, describing in detail his daily life and the ideas for his works. Later Vincent moved to Paris and found a whore named sin and she had already two children from previous guys but Vincent wanted to marry her. Van Gogh contracted syphilis from her and she later left him. He had started to believe he was an exile of the public.
Vincent later wrote a man by the name Paul Gauguin and asked him to live with him.Gauguin wrote back saying your crazy, shortly after Gauguin left and meet up with him. Van Gogh and Gauguin got in a lot of brutal conflicts, after an argument one night Van Gogh cut off the lower portion of his ear lobe.

Van Gogh’s Head of a Woman expected to fetch up to £2 million at auction
A Vincent van Gogh oil portrait of Gordina de Groot will go up for auction at Christie’s auction house in London on Tuesday. The 1885 painting titled Kop van een vrouw , or Head of a Woman, was expected to be sold for 1 million to 2 million pounds, or between 1.1 and 2.3 million euros.
The painting was produced while Van Gogh resided in Nuenen after his parents relocated to the Noord-Brabant town. The woman in the painting can also be seen in another key Van Gogh work from that period, The Potato Eaters.
“I see an inexhaustible resource for subjects from peasant life and the question is just – to seize it – to work,” Van Gogh wrote in a letter to his brother after he moved to Nuenen. He used the period to produce studies of peasants’ heads. “They remind one of the earth, sometimes appear to have been modelled out of it.”
Christie’s noted that Gordina de Groot wears a white bonnet in the painting, as was the custom, and the shadows created by that intrigued the artist. “The heads of these women here with the white caps – it’s difficult – but it’s so eternally beautiful,” Van Gogh wrote.
“The intimate nature of the painting reverberated beyond the canvas and rumours swept Nuenen that van Gogh was the father of de Groot’s child. While he vehemently denied these claims, the present work nevertheless suggests a particular tenderness between artist and sitter, evident in the potency of her stare,” Christie’s wrote in an essay about the piece.
The 41x33 centimeter painting was first owned by Van Gogh’s family, and then changed hands five times before it was bequeathed to Anna-Marie Veuve-Pierson in The Hague. She later relocated to Zurich, and the painting has remained in Switzerland since. It was last exhibited at Kunsthaus Zurich in 1943.
The painting is being sold as part of Christie’s 20th / 21st Century: London Evening Sale.

Vincent Willem van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853 in the small town of Zundert located in the Netherlands. His father, Theodorus, was a minister, and his mothers’ name was Anna. Vincent was the oldest of six children. He had two brothers, one named Theo and another named Cor. In addition, he had three sisters named Wil, Elisabeth, and Anna. Before Vincent was born, his parents had a child who was also named Vincent but was stillborn. In grief, they buried the child near the house that they lived in. As a result, Vincent had to grow up near a haunting grave with his name on it. Not a lot of information is known about his childhood education but his mother did encourage him to draw and paint as a child and teenager.
Van Gogh’s education had a big impact on his life. In 1869, when he was sixteen years old, his uncle got him a job as a trainee at The Hague (Dutch government). After a decent amount of time there, he went off to work in London and Paris offices. When he thought that he had found a suitable partner in London of 1874, he was rejected by her and his life darkened from there on out. After the rejection, Vincent wrote a letter to his brother consisting of a list of his top 56 favorite artists. The majority of them were realists. Of those top 56, there was his lifelong influence, Jean-François Millet. Millet is the artist who influenced all of van Gogh’s paintings of peasant life.
In 1876, he worked briefly as a school teacher in England and at a bookstore in the Netherlands. He moved to Southern Belgium two years later to work as a lay preacher (someone who is not yet allowed to conduct a mass) and study at a missionary school to follow in his father’s footsteps. It was until then, when he saw the people working in the mines, that he felt sympathy and made himself get rid of all his belongings and live his life in poverty. The church saw this action as undignified and dismissed him in 1879. After this incident, he decided that he wanted to be a full-time artist. When 1880 came along, he wanted to meet a female artist named Jules Breton; he was supposedly going to ask her about a few tips. He walked 43 miles to meet her but got too scared to talk to her. He turned around on her doorstep and headed back home. When he returned home, he enrolled at the Brussels Art Academy where he studied Anton van Rappard and his views on perspective and 3-D. After about a year there, he returned back to The Hague where he then studied Anton Mauve. Vincent then enrolled in the Art Academy in Antwerp in 1885 but thought that their teaching methods were unsuitable and moved in with his brother, Theo, in an apartment.
After some time together, Theo noticed that Vincent’s mood swings were a lot like having different personalities and in 1889, Vincent admitted himself into an asylum. This is where he met Dr. Paul Gachet. He said that he liked Paul because he was disorganized with his doctor work just like he was with his paintings. During that first year at the asylum, van Gogh lost the majority of his left ear. There are numerous theories on why this happened but a few are that he cut it off and sent it to one of the maidens who denied his affection; he got into an argument with a professional fencer named Gauguin and he cut it off with a sword; and finally, Vincent had a form of epilepsy and during one of his episodes, he was holding a blade and he accidently cut it off. In 1890, van Gogh threatened Dr. Gachet with a pistol because he had become outraged by the fact that he hadn’t hung up some of the paintings that he created. Later that year, he received news from his brother saying that he was going to move back to the Netherlands with his wife and child. Vincent became very upset at the thought of being alone again and went out to a field near their house and shot himself in the chest. Surprisingly, the bullet didn’t kill him and he walked back to the house and into his bedroom. It wasn’t until later that night when the innkeeper found him bleeding to death. They called a doctor but it was said that they couldn’t do anything for him because the bullet had lodged into his spine. After two days, he died in his brother’s arms. On the other hand, there is another theory saying that a teenager accidently shot him but van Gogh felt like the boy helped him by pulling the trigger and ending his suffering so he didn’t blame the kid in his letters.
About a year after Vincent’s death, his brother was putting together an art show of all of his work, but then died of bronchitis. Theo’s wife, Jo, then decided to finish her husband’s work and because of her, Vincent van Gogh is known world-wide today. Most of his work could be categorized into impressionism and realism. He produced 800 oil paintings, 700 drawings, and at least 650 letters were sent to his brother, Theo van Gogh.
Clearly, Vincent van Gogh may have had a rough life, but he left a great legacy behind. His life was that way for a reason, and maybe he didn’t receive the recognition he deserved while he was alive, but if it wasn’t for him, art would not be the same today.

In my opinion think Hatchet does a better job of telling the story than A cry in the wild. In the movie it didn’t really show Brian building the raft. The movie didn’t show when Brian use shoelace to build the raft. The book also did a better job of showing the dead pilot. The narrator said that Brian saw the fish eating off the skull of the pilot. In the movie it didn’t show the fish eating off of the pilot. As you can see Hatchet does a better job explaining the story than the movie.

“Hatchet” does a better job of telling the story, than “A cry in the wilds” . I believe this because it show’s more imagery and a better understanding of foreshadowing, rather than just showing us a picture. According to the text, the book showed imagery by saying , “he widened the hole with his finger and looked inside. Just an egg. I believe that hatchet does a better job of telling the story. I believe this because the book is more specific. For example in the book on page 75 it said that he through the hatchet at the wall and a shower of sparks rained down. Another example is in the book on page 141 it said that Brian was attacked by a moose in the movie he was attacked by a bear. One more example is that in the book on page 113 it said that the plain crashed by a L shaped lake in the movie he crashed by a o shaped lake. That is how I think that the movie hatchet is more specific than the movie a cry in the wild.

Tucked away on the end of a Grade-II listed church in south London is Cafe Van Gogh. The vegan, non-profit restaurant sits just around the corner from Van Gogh House, a museum erected in the Georgian terrace the artist lived in from 1873-74. Visitors to the café can expect to be greeted with a giant ceiling mural of the ubiquitous Starry Night (1889); “people love it,” says the director and head chef Bonita de Silva although, she adds, the paintwork is old now and would benefit from some work.

The issue is funding. The café not only serves food but also trains adults with disabilities, learning difficulties and mental health issues into the workforce—a worthwhile though costly initiative. Indeed, Van Gogh’s own difficult relationship with both work and mental health is well documented. It is a connection to the artist De Silva is proud of. Trainees currently work front-of-house and as baristas and waiters. The café is keen to begin training participants as kitchen porters but it is unable due to a lack of suitable kitchen.
The café is looking to raise £50,000 to complete a kitchen expansion that will allow for a much-needed training area. “At the moment it’s much more of a domestic setup,” De Silva says. The main kitchen is also a “disruptive environment” for those with additional needs. So far, £28,000 has been raised towards the project (£22,000 from a grant by Big Issue Invest and £6,000 in crowdfunding). Donations remain open .
Funding is also complicated by the fact that—despite the café’s non-profit status and public training programmes—it does not qualify as a charity, instead being registered as a Community Interest Company (CIC), which excludes them from many useful grants. As a business, Cafe Van Gogh is still relatively small, mostly serving the local community and those looking to make a day out of a visit to the museum. The cafe has launched campaigns to boost customer footfall. Booking drives were a great help post-pandemic but “it’s about keeping people coming through our doors”, de Silva says. Revenue from the business is the main funding source for the traineeships and regular patronage is the most effective way for supporters to help.
And when first-time patrons do visit the café—after taking in the overhead spectacle and the Provencal-like building—what should they order? De Silva recommends the vegan Philly cheesesteak, a hearty shiitake mushroom lasagne, and the Saturday brunch menu comprising, among other treats, a full English breakfast and French toast served with a fresh fruit compote.
