This essay example discusses the topic: "Is The Future Paperless?". It synthesizes a variety of viewpoints into a coherent, well-written essay. Notice how the author includes his/her own point of view in paragraph 2? Use this example as a guide to writing a good synthesis essay of your own. Remind yourself that a synthesis is NOT a summary.
Is going paperless the future? For schools, the answer is likely no, or not for some time. Paper documentation is still critical in the school environment, especially in administration. Student records contain sensitive information, and if online, in a paperless system, these records can be vulnerable to hacking. And while the idea of a school's records being hacked might seem alarmist, recall the recent hack of the United States Office of Personnel Management's hack. Schools might contain similar identifying information and might therefore be tempting to hackers.
Besides hacking, paper documents continue to have an advantage in established workplaces like schools. There, workflows already incorporate paper documents, and online systems operate only with significant investment in retraining. Students, too, rely on paper. For me, it is easier to get the full picture of an assignment from reading text written on a piece of paper rather than looking at a screen. True that some schools have initiatives in getting iPads and laptops for their students, but these expensive technologies are not as customizable by teachers as paper handouts, so their use is limited. Also, most people would like to have a paper backup in case something happens to their digital device. Paper and document technology are crucial to the current school environment, both in administration and students' own lives. As a company, H.G. Bissinger Office Technology is especially attuned to the significance of paper for education. They recently promoted one of their customer service managers to a new task force on meeting the document technology needs for education. That manager, Lyla Garrity, had created a uniquely strong collaborative relationship with Permian College. Through their work together, she realized that educational document services are an area that specialists could greatly improve, compared to unspecialized, general service that most schools suffer through. H.G. Bissinger Office Technology leases 10 copiers to the Northwest Local School District, along with technical support and copier supplies, excluding paper. For a school, the large investment in a machine is shadowed by the uncertainty of how far from obsolescence a machine might be. Also, purchasing a copier outright will leave the school or business to handle service on its own. Additionally, in these financially limited times, the initial investment of a large sum can be difficult to justify or approve. For schools, uncertainty over future budgets often makes a lease a more flexible option. Most copier leases deal with equipment costs by including provisions in which the client must purchase the machine at the end of the lease. More recently, lease companies like H.G. Bissinger Office Technology are offering leases that are more like rentals. After the monthly fee is paid, the company will take the machine back.
Each of the five items below is worth from 2 to 8 points. To calculate your composite score for your rough draft, add together your scores for all five rubric items below. The maximum score for your final draft is 40 points.

- Proficient (6 points): I have clearly synthesized the content from the article, paraphrasing the ideas and related topics to demonstrate comprehension; however, my essay does not clearly reflect my opinion on the topic. The majority of the main claims in my essay are backed up by specific factual evidence, although a small number of my claims may be unsubstantiated statements or broad generalizations. When quoting or paraphrasing the assigned reading, I may occasionally misrepresent it or take it out of context.
- Adequate (4 points): I have synthesized the content from the article, paraphrasing the ideas and related topics to demonstrate comprehension, but my essay does not mention my point of view on the topic. At least half of the main claims in my essay are based on factual evidence or properly cited passages from the assigned reading. The other half of my claims may be unreasonable, lack quoted or factual support, may be based on misinformation or misreading, may consist of broad generalizations, or may distort and incorrectly format the assigned text.
- Not Yet Adequate (2 points): I have synthesized some of the content from the article, but my paraphrasing demonstrates limited comprehension of the topic, and my opinion on the topic is not addressed. On balance, most of the claims in my essay are unsubstantiated or based on distortions (or misreadings) of the assigned text.
- No Points Awarded (0 points): I have demonstrated minimal synthesis of the topic. My essay does not support its claims with evidence of any kind; my essay does not make claims in response to the prompt.
2. Persuasive Appeals
- Excellent (8 points): My essay uses a variety of persuasive appeals (emotion, logic, and credibility) to support its claims.
- Proficient (6 points): My essay uses some of the strategies effectively (as above) some of the time.
- Adequate (4 points): My essay uses at least one persuasive appeal correctly, but may sometimes use them unfairly or unconvincingly.
- Not Yet Adequate (2 points): If my essay uses persuasive appeals at all, it does so unfairly or unconvincingly.
- No Points Awarded (0 points): My essay uses none of the standard persuasive appeals discussed in this course.

- Close to Proficient (4 points): The errors on the list below, singly or in combination, occur on average three times per 250 words; single errors from the list below may recur and form a distinct pattern of error; errors of haste or lack of proofreading are present; grammar errors are persistently distracting to the reader.
- Not Yet Adequate (2 points): Grammar errors are numerous and impede the reader's comprehension of my essay; my essay reflects a lack of proofreading.

- Adequate (4 points): Not always, but distractingly often, my essay does not read smoothly because it repeats singly or in combination with the stylistic errors listed above.
- Not Yet Adequate (2 points): My essay exhibits the stylistic errors above so frequently that it is very difficult to read.
Use this checklist to review each of your sentences for errors:
- Read each sentence out loud. Do they sound correct? Is anything missing? You can add to your sentences if you want to explain more about your topic.
- Spelling – Is every word spelled correctly?
- Correct words – Did you use the right word? Many words in English look similar but have different meanings (for example, like and lick). Check each word to make sure it's the right one.
- Timeline order – Are your events in the correct order? Make sure your sentences don't jump around.
- Past tense – Are the verbs in each sentence conjugated in past tense? Go back and review verb endings if you're not sure.
- Describing words – Do each of your sentences include at least one adjective or one adverb?
- Capitalization – The first word in every sentence should be capitalized. After the first word, only proper nouns (like people's names) should be capitalized. Everything else should be lower case.
- Punctuation – Does each sentence end with a period? Questions may end with a question mark (?), and exclamations may end with an exclamation mark (!), but most of your sentences should end with a period (.).

Report Cards
Report cards are just one of the many tools our teachers use to communicate with families, providing an opportunity for discussion and an essential check-in during the school year.
Because report cards are often a source of stress for both children and their families, we’ve created a video that explains how to read your child’s report card, as well as what to expect during parent/teacher conferences. Please take a few minutes to watch it, so you can get the most out of your partnership with your child’s teacher.
A standards-based report card lists the most important standards students should learn in each subject at their particular grade level. Instead of traditional letter grades, students receive a mark of 1-3 for grades TK-3 and 1-4 for grades 4 and 5 that indicates how well they have mastered the required standards.
Standards-based grading focuses on the student’s achievement relevant to each standard at the point of each grading period, rather than how quickly they learned or how many times it took them to master the standards. Our standards-based report card reflects the student’s:
- Current proficiency level on end-of-year standards expectations;
- Work in relation to the standards applied to all students at the grade level; and
- Demonstration of study and social skills.
Period 1: August to October A report card and parent/teacher conference is required. The conference is normally held in-person at the school site.
Period 2: October to February A report card is required. A parent/teacher conference is required if the student is deemed “At Risk for Retention”. All other conferences are optional. Either the parent or the teacher may request a conference at this time. Period 3: February to June A report card is required.

SJUSD is very excited to be implementing our K-2 Early Literacy Institute Program in all of our elementary schools. Our goal is to provide focused instruction with rigorous content that supports our students to achieve grade level reading skills by the end of first grade. To do this we have:

- Provided Language Learner Supports
- Integrated 21st century skills into our design
- Developed systematic planners so that every student is getting the same quality instruction at all of our schools.
What does the Early Literacy Block look like in a K-2 classroom?
Our Balanced Literacy Block is divided into 4 key literacy components: Phonological Awareness/Phonics, Reading Comprehension, Guided Reading/Collaborative groups and Writing . These components are implemented as whole group lessons, differentiated small teacher led groups in guided reading, and in collaborative learning experiences in which students continue to apply the targeted skill alongside their peers. Language is infused throughout the block to ensure we are building and extending their language and therefore creating effective communicators.
Writing instruction is taught using a Writer’s Workshop model. Students engage in a focused mini-lesson to extend their writing skills that are applied during independent writing time. By systematically putting all these components into place, devoting time every day to reading, and having students actively engage in their learning, we are creating happy readers in our classrooms! Readers who will continue to thrive and grow as learners because our teachers have established a solid foundation in literacy to equip them with the tools necessary to meet the demands of the content they will encounter in their educational path.

Student Success Teams
Each school in San Jose Unified has a Student Success Team (SST). A student can be referred to an SST either by their family or school staff when there are concerns regarding the student’s academics and learning. The family can initiate the process either by contacting the school in writing or speaking with school staff in person and requesting an SST for their child.
The purpose of the SST process is to bring together a collection of professionals to determine the best approach to meeting a student’s individual learning needs. The goal of the SST is to provide quality intervention and support to allow the student to make progress toward grade level standards. The SST meets every six (6) weeks to review the student’s data, select or adjust interventions, and determine appropriate next steps. The family plays a critical role in the SST process, consulting with the teacher during family-teacher conferences and attending SST meetings when invited. The SST remains in contact with the family throughout the process, developing a collaboration between home and school to maximize student growth.
Library Resources
San José Unified believes that the school library is an essential part of the learning community. We provide all students with the research tools needed to be prepared for college, career, and life. To browse the online catalog for print and ebooks, please visit the library resources on your school website . In addition to print resources, Library Databases are provided to all students at every grade level. Databases are important tools to foster critical thinking and inquiry based learning. Knowing how to use databases is an essential skill for all 21st century learners. They provide an indexed collection of magazine, journal, newspaper articles, abstracts, and other information, which has been checked for accuracy and reliability by publishers and then licensed for distribution in online/electronic format. California’s Common Core Standards are designed to reflect the knowledge and skills that our students need for success in college and careers. A common set of learning goals helps teachers and parents ensure students are challenged and making appropriate progress.

California educators have joined a national movement to adopt common standards and assessments for English language arts and mathematics. Common standards allow for collaboration among states on best practices and professional development.
These learning goals help ensure that students meet college and work expectations, are prepared to succeed in a global economy and society, and are provided with rigorous content and application of higher knowledge thinking.
Benchmarked against international standards, the Common Core Standards assist students in their preparation to complete the requirements for enrollment at a California public university.
The K-12 Common Core State Standards were developed through a state-led effort to establish consistent and clear education standards for English language arts and mathematics. The initiative was launched by and supported by the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governors Association. In the Common Core Standard adoption process, California added supporting standards to complete the unique picture necessary for our students.
The Common Core also added strength to the existing California standards by including additional standards for vocabulary and new standards for collaborative discussions. Literacy standards that focus on reading and writing instruction during history/social studies, science, and technology also were included. In mathematics, standards were added to demonstrate a stronger emphasis on number sense and algebraic thinking.
Sexual Health Education
The California Healthy Youth Act requires that comprehensive sexual health education and disease prevention education be provided to students at least once in middle school or junior high school and once in high school, starting in 7th grade.
These education programs are meant to encourage students to communicate with their parents, guardians, or other trusted adults about human sexuality. The information provided will be medically accurate, age‐appropriate, and inclusive of all students.

Parents/guardians will be notified in writing before students are offered instruction in comprehensive sexual health education and HIV/AIDS prevention education. You have the right to review written and audiovisual materials on request. Average/4 points: The thesis phrasing sounds simple and lacks complexity. The writer does not word the thesis correctly.
Needs Improvement/2 points: The thesis statement requires a clear objective and does not fit the theme in the content of the essay.
Unacceptable/0 points: The thesis is not evident in the introduction.
Excellent/8 points: The essay is clear and focused. The work holds the reader’s attention. Besides, the relevant details and quotes enrich the thesis statement.
Very Good/6 points: The essay is mostly focused and contains a few useful details and quotes.
Average/4 points: The writer begins the work by defining the topic. However, the development of ideas appears general.
Needs Improvement/2 points: The author fails to define the topic well, or the writer focuses on several issues.
Unacceptable/0 points: The essay lacks a clear sense of a purpose or thesis statement. Readers have to make suggestions based on sketchy or missing ideas to understand the intended meaning. Essay rubric requirements are missed.
6. Sentence Fluency
Excellent/8 points: The essay has a natural flow, rhythm, and cadence. The sentences are well built and have a wide-ranging and robust structure that enhances reading.
Very Good/6 points: The ideas mostly flow and motivate a compelling reading.
Average/4 points: The text hums along with a balanced beat but tends to be more businesslike than musical. Besides, the flow of ideas tends to become more mechanical than fluid.
Needs Improvement/2 points: The essay appears irregular and hard to read.
Unacceptable/0 points: Readers have to go through the essay several times to give this paper a fair interpretive reading.
7. Conventions
Excellent/8 points: The student demonstrates proper use of standard writing conventions, like spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar, usage, and paragraphing. The student uses protocols in a way that improves the readability of the essay.
Very Good/6 points: The student demonstrates proper writing conventions and uses them correctly. One can read the essay with ease, and errors are rare. Few touch-ups can make the composition ready for publishing.
Average/4 points: The writer shows reasonable control over a short range of standard writing rules. The writer handles all the conventions and enhances readability. The errors in the essay tend to distract and impair legibility.
Needs Improvement/2 points: The writer makes an effort to use various conventions, including spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar usage, and paragraphing. The essay contains multiple errors.
Unacceptable/0 points: The author makes repetitive errors in spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar, usage, and paragraphing. Some mistakes distract readers and make it hard to understand the concepts. Essay rubric rules are not covered.
8. Presentation
Excellent/8 points: The form and presentation of the text enhance the readability of the essay and the flow of ideas.
Very Good/6 points: The format has few mistakes and is easy to read.
Average/4 points: The writer’s message is understandable in this format.
Needs Improvement/2 points: The writer’s message is only comprehensible infrequently, and the paper appears disorganized.
Unacceptable/0 points: Readers receive a distorted message due to difficulties connecting to the presentation of the text.

Basic Differences in Education Levels and Essay Rubrics

While this essay seems extremely overwhelming, considering there are a total of three free-response essays to complete, with proper time management and practiced skills, this essay is manageable and straightforward. In order to enhance the time management aspect of the test to the best of your ability, it is essential to divide the essay up into five key steps.
Step 1: Analyze the Prompt
As soon as the clock starts, carefully read and analyze what the prompt asks from you. It might be helpful to markup the text to identify the most critical details. Step 4: Create a Minimal Essay Outline
Developing an outline might seem like a waste of time when you are up against the clock, but believe us, taking 5-10 minutes to outline your essay will be much more useful in the long run than jumping right into the essay.
Your outline should include your thesis statement and three main pieces of evidence that will constitute each body paragraph. Under each piece of evidence should be 2-3 details from the sources that you will use to back up your claim and some commentary on how that evidence proves your thesis.
Step 5: Write your Essay
Use the remaining 30-35 minutes to write your essay. This should be relatively easy if you took the time to mark up the sources and have a detailed outline. These sentences are critical to the overall flow of the essay and where you will be explaining how the evidence supports or undermines the claim in the prompt.
Also, when referencing your sources, write the in-text citations as follows: “Source 1,” “Source 2,” “Source 3,” etc. Make sure to pay attention to which source is which in order to not incorrectly cite your sources. In-text citations will impact your score on the essay and are an integral part of the process.
After you finish writing, read through your essay for any grammatical errors or mistakes before you move onto the next essay.

This helps to finance improvements to the town. But, there is no doubt that wind power is also hurting the power companies. Although, as renewable power goes, wind is incredibly cheap, it is still significantly more expensive than fossil fuels. So, while it is helping to cut down on emissions, it costs electric companies more than traditional fossil fuel plants. While the general economic trend is positive, there are some setbacks which must be overcome before wind power can take over as truly more effective than fossil fuels.
[4] Aesthetics may be the greatest setback for power companies. Although there may be significant economic and environmental benefit to wind power, people will always fight to preserve pure, unspoiled land. Unfortunately, not much can be done to improve the visual aesthetics of the turbines. White paint is the most common choice because it “[is] associated with cleanliness.” (Source E).
