In 1946 Sister Teresa experienced her “call within a call,” which she considered divine inspiration to devote herself to caring for the sick and poor. She then moved into the slums she had observed while teaching. Municipal authorities, upon her petition, gave her a pilgrim hostel, near the sacred temple of Kali, where she founded her order in 1948. Sympathetic companions soon flocked to her aid. Dispensaries and outdoor schools were organized. Mother Teresa adopted Indian citizenship, and her Indian nuns all donned the sari as their habit. In 1950 her order received canonical sanction from Pope Pius XII , and in 1965 it became a pontifical congregation (subject only to the pope). In 1952 she established Nirmal Hriday (“Place for the Pure of Heart”), a hospice where the terminally ill could die with dignity. Her order also opened numerous centres serving the blind, the aged, and the disabled. Under Mother Teresa’s guidance, the Missionaries of Charity built a leper colony, called Shanti Nagar (“Town of Peace”), near Asansol, India.

In 1962 the Indian government awarded Mother Teresa the Padma Shri, one of its highest civilian honours, for her services to the people of India. Pope Paul VI on his trip to India in 1964 gave her his ceremonial limousine, which she immediately raffled to help finance her leper colony. She was summoned to Rome in 1968 to found a home there, staffed primarily with Indian nuns. In recognition of her apostolate, she was honoured on January 6, 1971, by Pope Paul, who awarded her the first Pope John XXIII Peace Prize. In 1979 she received the Nobel Peace Prize for her humanitarian work, and the following year the Indian government conferred on her the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honour.

In her later years Mother Teresa spoke out against divorce , contraception , and abortion . She also suffered ill health and had a heart attack in 1989. In 1990 she resigned as head of the order but was returned to office by a nearly unanimous vote—the lone dissenting voice was her own. A worsening heart condition forced her retirement, and the order chose the Indian-born Sister Nirmala as her successor in 1997. At the time of Mother Teresa’s death, her order included hundreds of centres in more than 90 countries with some 4,000 nuns and hundreds of thousands of lay workers. Within two years of her death, the process to declare her a saint was begun, and Pope John Paul II issued a special dispensation to expedite the process of canonization . She was beatified on October 19, 2003, reaching the ranks of the blessed in what was then the shortest time in the history of the church. She was canonized by Pope Francis I on September 4, 2016.

Although Mother Teresa displayed cheerfulness and a deep commitment to God in her daily work, her letters (which were collected and published in 2007) indicate that she did not feel God’s presence in her soul during the last 50 years of her life. The letters reveal the suffering she endured and her feeling that Jesus had abandoned her at the start of her mission. Continuing to experience a spiritual darkness, she came to believe that she was sharing in Christ’s Passion, particularly the moment in which Christ asks, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Despite this hardship, Mother Teresa integrated the feeling of absence into her daily religious life and remained committed to her faith and her work for Christ.

On October 7, 1950, Mother Teresa received permission from the Holy See to start her own order, “The Missionaries of Charity”, whose primary task was to love and care for those persons nobody was prepared to look after. In 1965 the Society became an International Religious Family by a decree of Pope Paul VI.

Today the order comprises Active and Contemplative branches of Sisters and Brothers in many countries. In 1963 both the Contemplative branch of the Sisters and the Active branch of the Brothers was founded. In 1979 the Contemplative branch of the Brothers was added, and in 1984 the Priest branch was established.

The Society of Missionaries has spread all over the world, including the former Soviet Union and Eastern European countries. They provide effective help to the poorest of the poor in a number of countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and they undertake relief work in the wake of natural catastrophes such as floods, epidemics, and famine, and for refugees. The order also has houses in North America, Europe and Australia, where they take care of the shut-ins, alcoholics, homeless, and AIDS sufferers.

The Missionaries of Charity throughout the world are aided and assisted by Co-Workers who became an official International Association on March 29, 1969. By the 1990s there were over one million Co-Workers in more than 40 countries. Along with the Co-Workers, the lay Missionaries of Charity try to follow Mother Teresa’s spirit and charism in their families.

Mother Teresa’s work has been recognised and acclaimed throughout the world and she has received a number of awards and distinctions, including the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize (1971) and the Nehru Prize for her promotion of international peace and understanding (1972). She also received the Balzan Prize (1979) and the Templeton and Magsaysay awards.

Mother Teresa was the founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic congregation of women dedicated to helping the poor. Considered one of the 20th Century's greatest humanitarians, she was canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta in 2016.

Who Was Mother Teresa?

Nun and missionary Mother Teresa, known in the Catholic church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta, devoted her life to caring for the sick and poor. Born in Macedonia to parents of Albanian-descent and having taught in India for 17 years, Mother Teresa experienced her "call within a call" in 1946. Her order established a hospice; centers for the blind, aged and disabled; and a leper colony.

Mother Teresa’s Family and Young Life

Mother Teresa was born on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, the current capital of the Republic of Macedonia. The following day, she was baptized as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu.

Mother Teresa’s parents, Nikola and Dranafile Bojaxhiu, were of Albanian descent; her father was an entrepreneur who worked as a construction contractor and a trader of medicines and other goods. The Bojaxhius were a devoutly Catholic family, and Nikola was deeply involved in the local church as well as in city politics as a vocal proponent of Albanian independence.

In 1919, when Mother Teresa — then Agnes — was only eight years old, her father suddenly fell ill and died. While the cause of his death remains unknown, many have speculated that political enemies poisoned him.

In the aftermath of her father's death, Agnes became extraordinarily close to her mother, a pious and compassionate woman who instilled in her daughter a deep commitment to charity. Although by no means wealthy, Drana Bojaxhiu extended an open invitation to the city's destitute to dine with her family. "My child, never eat a single mouthful unless you are sharing it with others," she counseled her daughter. When Agnes asked who the people eating with them were, her mother uniformly responded, "Some of them are our relations, but all of them are our people."

Education and Nunhood

Agnes attended a convent-run primary school and then a state-run secondary school. As a girl, she sang in the local Sacred Heart choir and was often asked to sing solos. The congregation made an annual pilgrimage to the Church of the Black Madonna in Letnice, and it was on one such trip at the age of 12 that she first felt a calling to religious life. Six years later, in 1928, an 18-year-old Agnes Bojaxhiu decided to become a nun and set off for Ireland to join the Sisters of Loreto in Dublin. It was there that she took the name Sister Mary Teresa after Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.

A year later, Sister Mary Teresa traveled on to Darjeeling, India, for the novitiate period; in May 1931, she made her First Profession of Vows. Afterward, she was sent to Calcutta, where she was assigned to teach at Saint Mary's High School for Girls, a school run by the Loreto Sisters and dedicated to teaching girls from the city's poorest Bengali families. Sister Teresa learned to speak both Bengali and Hindi fluently as she taught geography and history and dedicated herself to alleviating the girls' poverty through education.

On May 24, 1937, she took her Final Profession of Vows to a life of poverty, chastity and obedience. As was the custom for Loreto nuns, she took on the title of "Mother" upon making her final vows and thus became known as Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa continued to teach at Saint Mary's, and in 1944 she became the school's principal. Through her kindness, generosity and unfailing commitment to her students' education, she sought to lead them to a life of devotion to Christ. "Give me the strength to be ever the light of their lives, so that I may lead them at last to you," she wrote in prayer.

'Call Within a Call'

On September 10, 1946, Mother Teresa experienced a second calling, the "call within a call" that would forever transform her life. She was riding in a train from Calcutta to the Himalayan foothills for a retreat when she said Christ spoke to her and told her to abandon teaching to work in the slums of Calcutta aiding the city's poorest and sickest people.

Since Mother Teresa had taken a vow of obedience, she could not leave her convent without official permission. After nearly a year and a half of lobbying, in January 1948 she finally received approval to pursue this new calling. That August, donning the blue-and-white sari that she would wear in public for the rest of her life, she left the Loreto convent and wandered out into the city. After six months of basic medical training, she voyaged for the first time into Calcutta's slums with no more specific a goal than to aid "the unwanted, the unloved, the uncared for."

Missionaries of Charity

Mother Teresa quickly translated her calling into concrete actions to help the city's poor. She began an open-air school and established a home for the dying destitute in a dilapidated building she convinced the city government to donate to her cause. In October 1950, she won canonical recognition for a new congregation, the Missionaries of Charity, which she founded with only a handful of members—most of them former teachers or pupils from St. Mary's School.

As the ranks of her congregation swelled and donations poured in from around India and across the globe, the scope of Mother Teresa's charitable activities expanded exponentially. Over the course of the 1950s and 1960s, she established a leper colony, an orphanage, a nursing home, a family clinic and a string of mobile health clinics.

In 1971, Mother Teresa traveled to New York City to open her first American-based house of charity, and in the summer of 1982, she secretly went to Beirut, Lebanon, where she crossed between Christian East Beirut and Muslim West Beirut to aid children of both faiths. In 1985, Mother Teresa returned to New York and spoke at the 40th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly. While there, she also opened Gift of Love, a home to care for those infected with HIV/AIDS.

Mother Teresa’s Awards and Recognition

In February 1965, Pope Paul VI bestowed the Decree of Praise upon the Missionaries of Charity, which prompted Mother Teresa to begin expanding internationally. By the time of her death in 1997, the Missionaries of Charity numbered more than 4,000 — in addition to thousands more lay volunteers — with 610 foundations in 123 countries around the world.

The Decree of Praise was just the beginning, as Mother Teresa received various honors for her tireless and effective charity. She was awarded the Jewel of India, the highest honor bestowed on Indian civilians, as well as the now-defunct Soviet Union's Gold Medal of the Soviet Peace Committee. In 1979, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her work "in bringing help to suffering humanity."

Criticism of Mother Teresa

Despite this widespread praise, Mother Teresa's life and work have not gone without its controversies. In particular, she has drawn criticism for her vocal endorsement of some of the Catholic Church's more controversial doctrines, such as opposition to contraception and abortion. "I feel the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion," Mother Teresa said in her 1979 Nobel lecture.

In 1995, she publicly advocated a "no" vote in the Irish referendum to end the country's constitutional ban on divorce and remarriage. The most scathing criticism of Mother Teresa can be found in Christopher Hitchens' book The Missionary Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice , in which Hitchens argued that Mother Teresa glorified poverty for her own ends and provided a justification for the preservation of institutions and beliefs that sustained widespread poverty.

When and How Mother Teresa Died

After several years of deteriorating health, including heart, lung and kidney problems, Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997, at the age of 87.

Mother Teresa’s Letters

In 2003, the publication of Mother Teresa’s private correspondence caused a wholesale re-evaluation of her life by revealing the crisis of faith she suffered for most of the last 50 years of her life.

In one despairing letter to a confidant, she wrote, "Where is my Faith—even deep down right in there is nothing, but emptiness & darkness—My God—how painful is this unknown pain—I have no Faith—I dare not utter the words & thoughts that crowd in my heart—& make me suffer untold agony." While such revelations are shocking considering her public image, they have also made Mother Teresa a more relatable and human figure to all those who experience doubt in their beliefs.

Mother Teresa’s Miracles and Canonization

In 2002, the Vatican recognized a miracle involving an Indian woman named Monica Besra, who said she was cured of an abdominal tumor through Mother Teresa's intercession on the one-year anniversary of her death in 1998. She was beatified (declared in heaven) as "Blessed Teresa of Calcutta" on October 19, 2003, by Pope John Paul II .

On December 17, 2015, Pope Francis issued a decree that recognized a second miracle attributed to Mother Teresa, clearing the way for her to be canonized as a saint of the Roman Catholic Church. The second miracle involved the healing of Marcilio Andrino, a Brazilian man who was diagnosed with a viral brain infection and lapsed into a coma. His wife, family and friends prayed to Mother Teresa, and when the man was brought to the operating room for emergency surgery, he woke up without pain and was cured of his symptoms, according to a statement from the Missionaries of Charity Father.

Mother Teresa was canonized as a saint on September 4, 2016, a day before the 19th anniversary of her death. Pope Francis led the canonization mass, which was held in St. Peter's Square in Vatican City. Tens of thousands of Catholics and pilgrims from around the world attended the canonization to celebrate the woman who had been called “the saint of the gutters” during her lifetime because of her charitable work with the poor.

“After due deliberation and frequent prayer for divine assistance, and having sought the counsel of many of our brother bishops, we declare and define Blessed Teresa of Calcutta to be a saint, and we enroll her among the saints, decreeing that she is to be venerated as such by the whole church,” Pope Francis said in Latin.

The Pope spoke about Mother Teresa’s life of service in the homily. ”Mother Teresa, in all aspects of her life, was a generous dispenser of divine mercy, making herself available for everyone through her welcome and defense of human life, those unborn and those abandoned and discarded," he said. "She bowed down before those who were spent, left to die on the side of the road, seeing in them their God-given dignity. She made her voice heard before the powers of this world, so that they might recognize their guilt for the crime of poverty they created."

He also told the faithful to follow her example and practice compassion. “Mercy was the salt which gave flavor to her work, it was the light which shone in the darkness of the many who no longer had tears to shed for their poverty and suffering,” he said, adding. "May she be your model of holiness."

Since her death, Mother Teresa has remained in the public spotlight. For her unwavering commitment to aiding those most in need, Mother Teresa stands out as one of the greatest humanitarians of the 20th century. She combined profound empathy and a fervent commitment to her cause with incredible organizational and managerial skills that allowed her to develop a vast and effective international organization of missionaries to help impoverished citizens all across the globe.

Despite the enormous scale of her charitable activities and the millions of lives she touched, to her dying day, she held only the most humble conception of her own achievements. Summing up her life in characteristically self-effacing fashion, Mother Teresa said, "By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus."

Early Life of Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa, birth name Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu was born in 1910. She was an Albanian and Indian nun who took birth in an Albanian family and was baptized after birth. Although she was born on the 26th, she considered the 27th (the day of baptism) as her true birth date.

When she was a teenager (12), Mary Teresa felt that god was calling her and was convinced that she would commit herself to a life of religion. This commitment was further strengthened in 1928 when she prayed at the shrine.

At the age of 18, Mary left her home and went to Ireland, where she joined the Sisters of Loreto. There she started learning English and wanted to become a missionary. After that, she never met her sister or mother in life.

The courageous catholic nun came to India in 1929 and started her practice in Darjeeling. There she started learning Bengali and began teaching at a nearby school. Mother Teresa took her religious vow in 1931 and solemn vows in 1937. At that time, she was teaching at the Loreto convent school and used the “mother” style of teaching. There, she served for approximately 20 years. Mary was selected as the headmistress by 1944, and she enjoyed teaching the kids, but at the same time, she was disturbed because of the spreading poverty in Calcutta. The situation due to the Bengal Famine of 1943 left such a deep impression on her that she couldn’t stop herself from serving.

In 1946, Mary Teresa visited Darjeeling, where her inner conscience called her to serve the poor people of India. In 1948, she took permission from the school to leave and dedicate herself entirely to the upliftment of affected people in the Calcutta slums. Teresa didn’t have any funds and depended on Divine Providence. Then she began an open-air school for the children. As the work was noble, she got immense financial support that expanded her scope of work.

In 1950, Mother Teresa introduced Missionaries of Charity and chose a white sari with two blue stripes.

In 1946, Mother Teresa experienced her call from her inner self and took a train from Calcutta to Darjeeling. It was an annual retreat, and while talking about it, she said that her order was to leave the convent and help those in need. She couldn’t break this faith and order of God.

According to Joseph Langford, Sister Teresa was slowly turning into Mother Teresa, but everyone was unaware of that.

So, finally, her work began in 1948, and she adopted Indian citizenship. She stayed in Patna for several years and attained medical training. Once her training was successful, she went to the slums and began her work. In Calcutta, Mother Teresa started a school. In the initial phase of 1949, she was joined by young women and started helping people who were hungry and poor.

The Prime Minister and other Indian officials soon recognized her noble efforts. Earlier, she experienced difficulty with food and supplies. She didn’t have any income and had to beg for the same. These hardships also led her to feel lonely and that she should return to the convent. But she kept fighting.

Slowly she received immense support and was able to help the poor, just like intended. Mother Teresa received several acclamations for her deeds, including the Balzan prize, Nehru prize, Pope John XXIII Peace prize, and Magsaysay and Templeton awards.

In 1983, Mother Teresa had a heart attack. She was in Rome at that time, and when she received the second attack, she got a pacemaker. In 1991, she was in Mexico and caught pneumonia. The purpose of Nirmala Shishu Bhawan was to help orphans and homeless children. She was awarded “Padma Shri” in 1962 and the highest civilian award “Bharat Ratna” in 1980 by the Government of India.

Agnesë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, better known as Mother Teresa, was born in today’s capital of North Macedonia, Skopje, in August 1910. However, the date of birth of Mother Teresa is still an issue of a robust discussion. Her parents were of Albanian descent, even though, back in 1910, an Albanian state did not exist yet. It was part of the Ottoman Empire until 1912 when the Republic of Albania declared its independence. Although Mother Teresa was Albanian, she had not visited Albania until 1989 (Endresen 53). The reason for this was Albanian officials who refused to issue her a visa. Once the Communist regime fell, the problem solved itself. In her early years, Mother Teresa understood that her mission was to spread the love of Jesus Christ. When she was eighteen, she decided to join a Catholic congregation called “the Sisters of Loreto,” which sent missions to India. Having taken a mandatory training in Dublin, Mother Teresa went to India where she finally made her vows as a nun.

In Calcutta, Mother Teresa was teaching at the school from 1931 to 1948. During these years, she noticed that outside the walls of the convent, ordinary poor people were suffering a lot. This observation was an incentive that made Mother Teresa ask for permission from her congregation to devote herself to helping most marginalized people in Calcutta. First, she started an open-air school, but soon other people, who cared about vulnerable residents of Calcutta, joined her. In 1950, Mother Teresa founded her order called The Missionaries of Charity . Fifteen years after, the congregation received a decree of the Pope, which made the work of the order possible in other countries of the world. Overall, she was a well-respected person who committed herself to help less privileged people. She received such awards as the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize for her humanitarian endeavors and contribution (Endresen 53).

Mother Teresa turned her entire life into a commitment to serve people and ease the sufferings of the most vulnerable ones. The government was not always on her side, so in the case of a leaper asylum, she was forced to evacuate all the patients. However, Mother Teresa wasn’t a person who would easily give up, she started a fundraising campaign, and when she accumulated enough resources, she founded a mobile leprosy clinic. Furthermore, Mother Teresa opened similar houses for people with HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. She traveled to conflict-torn areas to rescue children and move them from demolished hospitals.

Mother Teresa was a good leader who skillfully conveyed her ideas to the general public all around the world. Mother Teresa was an independent personality who believed in changing the world by following the path of God. She was born on 26th August 1910 in the city of Skopje (which the largest city of North Macedonia). The real name of Mother Teresa was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. Mother Teresa belonged to Roman Catholic. Her family called her Gonxha, that means flower bud or little bud in Albanian. She had an elder brother whose name was Lazar and an elder sister with a name- Aga. Nikola Bojaxhiu was her father, who was a successful building contractor and also a merchant who travelled Europe all around.

Dranafile Bojaxhiu was her mother who worked as a traditional Albanian housewife who spent her life just cooking, cleaning, mending, and caring for her children and spouse. Her father took care of a local church along with city politics. When the Mother Teresa was just eight years old, his father died suddenly due to serve ill. Until today, the cause of his death is uncertain, but it is believed that his death was due to poison given by the political enemies.

After the death of her father, Mother Teresa became very close to her mother. Her mother insisted her to charity and helped others through his life. Even though they were not rich at that time, her mother still sent an open invitation to the people of her area to dine with her family. Her mother also taught her children that “No one will eat a single mouthful unless they share with others.” When Mother Teresa asked her mother that who were those people who came for dining, then she replied uniformly that “Some were our relatives. However, all were our people”.

Mother Teresa first studied in a convent-run primary school and then in a state-run secondary school. She always sang in the local Sacred Heart choir and often liked to sing solos. At the age of 12, she realized deeply about religious life when she attended a congregation organized in the Black Madonna church in Lettice. When she turned 18 years old, she decided to become a nun and decided to move to Ireland to join the Sisters of Loreto in Dublin. Once she reached there, she got the name Sister Mary Teresa after Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.

Then, Sister Mary Teresa (Mother Teresa) went to Darjeeling for the novitiate period. In the year 1931, Sister Mary Teresa made her first profession of vows. Then she called to Calcutta (Kolkata) to teach at Saint Mary’s High School for Girls. That school was run by the Loreto Sisters where only most impoverished Bengali families are invited to study. Since she was well aware of both Hindi and Bengali languages, she was assigned to teach history and geography. She explained them thoroughly; thereby, they can alleviate their poverty through education.

On 24th May 1937, Sister Mary adopted her final profession of vows to a life of chastity, obedience, and poverty. Since she was holding the tradition for Loreto nuns, she honoured with the title of ‘Mother’ once she took her final vows, hence, became called as Mother Teresa. During adopting the final profession of vows, she had been in her teaching profession at Saint Mary’s school. In the year 1944, Mother Teresa became the principal of the same school.

Through her infinite kindness and uninterrupted ambitions to her student’s education, she became able to adopt them the life of devotion to Christ. “Give me the strength to be ever the light of their lives, so that I may lead them at last to you” was the famous line wrote by her. On 5th September 1997, Mother Teresa was died at the age of 87 due to diseases like lung, heart, and kidney. After her death, the Sisters of the Missionaries of Charity numbered 3,914 and were established in 594 communities in 123 countries across the world.

Originally she started a school in Motijhil (Calcutta); in a little while she started nursing to the needs of the impoverished and starving. In the commencement of 1949 she was joined in her endeavor by a group of youthful women and laid the basics to form a new spiritual community serving the “poorest among the poor”.

Mother Teresa experienced a heart attack in Rome in 1983, while an appointment with Pope John Paul II. After her next attack in 1989, she was given an artificial pacemaker. In 1991, after a fight with pneumonia while in Mexico, she suffered additional heart problems. She presented to quit her position as head of the Missionaries of Charity. But the nuns of the order, in an undisclosed ballot, nominated for her to continue. Mother Teresa approved to carry on her work as head of the order until she took her last breath on 5th September 1997.

On her arrival in India, she began by working as a teacher; however, the widespread poverty of Calcutta made a deep impression on her, and this led to her starting a new order called “The Missionaries of Charity”. The primary objective of this mission was to look after people, who nobody else was prepared to look after. Mother Teresa felt that serving others was a fundamental principle of the teachings of Jesus Christ. She often mentioned the saying of Jesus,

“Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, you do it to me.”

As Mother Teresa said herself:

“Love cannot remain by itself – it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action, and that action is service .” – Mother Teresa

In 1952, she opened her first home for the dying, which allowed people to die with dignity. Mother Teresa often spent time with those who were dying. Some have criticised the lack of proper medical attention, and their refusal to give painkillers. Others say that it afforded many neglected people the opportunity to die knowing that someone cared.

Her work spread around the world. By 2013, there were 700 missions operating in over 130 countries. The scope of their work also expanded to include orphanages and hospices for those with terminal illnesses.

Mother Teresa never sought to convert those of another faith. Those in her hospices were given the religious rites appropriate to their faith. However, she had a very firm Catholic faith and took a strict line on abortion, the death penalty and divorce – even if her position was unpopular. The Missionaries of Charity now has branches throughout the world including branches in the developed world where they work with the homeless and people affected by AIDS. In 1965, the organisation became an International Religious Family by a decree of Pope Paul VI.

In the 1960s, the life of Mother Teresa was brought to a wider public attention by Malcolm Muggeridge who wrote a book and produced a documentary called “ Something Beautiful for God ”.

In later years, she was more active in western developed countries. She commented that though the West was materially prosperous, there was often a spiritual poverty.

Following Mother Teresa’s death, the Vatican began the process of beatification, which is the second step on the way to canonization and sainthood. Mother Teresa was formally beatified in October 2003 by Pope John Paul II . In September 2015, Pope Francis declared:

“Mother Teresa, in all aspects of her life, was a generous dispenser of divine mercy, making herself available for everyone through her welcome and defense of human life, those unborn and those abandoned and discarded,” “She bowed down before those who were spent, left to die on the side of the road, seeing in them their God-given dignity. She made her voice heard before the powers of this world, so that they might recognize their guilt for the crime of poverty they created.”

Mother Teresa was a living saint who offered a great example and inspiration to the world.

How it works

St. Teresa of Calcutta is a well known saint in the Catholic Church. She was born on August 26, 1910 and lived her life doing the service that God intended her to do up until her death on September 5, 1997. She received a strong desire “to quench His thirst for love and for souls.” Living her life dedicated to those which God had called her to serve she is now the patron saint of the archdiocese of Calcutta and the doubters. Pope John Paul II beatified her on October 18, 2003. She was later canonized on September 4, 2016 by Pope Francis. Her feast day is on September 5.

St. Teresa trained with Medical Mission Sisters in Patna to learn medicine to cure the needy. She went into the slums of Calcutta on December 21, 1948. She cared for those had a scratch on there finger to those who were about to die. The Missionaries of Charity started their day with Mass, then went out to serve with a rosary in their hands. Some of her students from where she taught joined her later. The order was officially started on October 7, 1950. Mother Teresa later on sent her sisters to different parts of India. In serving everyone who was unable to care for themselves she won the Nobel Prize for peace in 1979. Mother Teresa saw and respected the human dignity of everyone. Everything she did, was done with love for God.

An important part of her journey were the miracles that she endoured. The first miracle was for a woman who was under the care of her and her sisters. Her name was Monica Besra, she had a massive tumor. A medal that Mother Teresa had touched was laid over her one night and the next morning the tumor was gone! It is considered a miracle because the doctors gave her no hope, because the tumor was so big. It was considered a miracle in the church in 2002 by Pope John Paul II. Another miracle that she endured was to Marcilio Andrino, he had a bacteria infection in his brain. His wife prayed to Mother Teresa asking her to intercede, after he had fallen into a comma. Before he went into surgery he woke up and was healed. This was confirmed in 2015. Mother Teresa died on September 5 1997 of congestive heart failure.

I chose Saint Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa) as my confirmation saint because I admired how she devoted her life to God and the poor. She was a missionary who changed the lives of so many people who had no one to care for them. Her faith in the lord was so strong that it sparkled so that everyone could see it. When Mother Teresa was serving them she made them feel like they were equal and that God loved them. She also attended adoration every day. I am going to try to imitate St. Mother Teresa by doing more servis hours. I will put more trust in God, and show kindness to others. St. Teresa loved God to her highest ability and in doing it, it allowed her to love the poor and lonesome people as well. Her life was devoted to God and doing servis.
