The word ‘home’ is something that is often misunderstood. Home makes up your identity and not many people know that. Therefore you ask me, ‘what is home?’ Home is not just in your house. Home is a place that surrounds you. It’s you environment and cause for emotions. Your home is where you are with the people that surround you (peers, family, and strangers), as well as cars, houses, stores, and/or toys.

Have you ever heard the saying, “home is where the heart is”? This makes so much sense, because everyone you love either lives in your home, or comes to visit you. They may come in all different shapes and sizes, but they serve a much greater purpose then simply covering our heads and storing our possessions. I believe that there is no place like home.
My home isn’t just a place where I sleep and eat; it’s a gathering place for my friends and family. It’s a place where I don’t have to hide my emotions, because everyone who’s ever there are those who care about me. I can be myself, and I don’t have to worry about what other people think about me. I believe that a home is a place where I can be as silly as I want and not be embarrassed about anything.
Although many of us, when we think of home, think of homework, annoying siblings, and chores. We never seem to look beyond all of that and see the importance of home. Stop and think for a second, what would your life be like without your home? No home means no shelter, no shower, no bed, and nowhere to feel truly safe. I believe my life would be miserable without a loving home.
I don’t just love my home because it’s a great place to relax and be myself, but because my family lives there too. I love my family, and it’s wonderful to have a place to be with them, because honestly, I’m not home very often. No matter how many homes I have in my life, I know that the feeling I have at home will never change, because of my family. I believe a home isn’t made up of just architectural designs and some bricks thrown together, but of people who live there and care about one another.
My belief is a simple one, but my home is the refuge in my complicated life. It’s sometimes easy to take a home for granted, and I typically treat it like a pit-stop, but I know it serves a much greater purpose. It is a place that holds my memories, a place where I lay my head, but more importantly, a place where I feel myself.

There’s No Place Like Home
How many times have you appreciated things when you don’t have them anymore? People usually don’t know the value of having something in their life, until it’s gone. That’s when they realize how much meaning it used to have to them, because they start to miss it. Maybe because people think that whatever they have it’s going to be there for them forever so they just don’t see the importance that it has in their life and how it will impact them not to have it. There are many people in the world who don’t have the security to go back to a place where they can get a good night sleep, a hot shower or a family to be waiting for you with their arms open. Many people consider their home to be there for them eternally, but there are people who don’t even have a safe place to call home. The book, Keesha’s House by Helen Frost, tells the story of Keesha a teenager girl who found a new secure place to call home with Joe and other teenager lookout to her house when they just cant make it to their own home. “There is no place like home.” Now that I have been away from home for almost three years, I have come to appreciate everything that I have there, starting with being in company of my family and friends to having a comfortable bed and all the commodities that come with. I learned to appreciate the food my mom prepares, even the ones I used to complain about, because when I am away I miss her cooking and being in company of my best friend. I have learned to value everything that my parents do for me when I am home to make me feel comfortable and special. I know that there aren’t many people in the world who have this opportunity to have a place to call home, which has make me appreciate more what God has given me. I feel the best thing a home comes with is the love of a family, and it might not be your biological family, but living with people who cares about and loves you. And sometimes, parents don’t realize the impact this is creating on their children life, until its to late and they run away looking for a stable place where they find true happiness and they are secure and love.

My house is located in Bien Hoa city, Dong Nai province. It is just a small house, it has no garden but there is a small enough balcony to grow flowers. There are five rooms: living room, bedroom, dining room, kitchen and bathroom and I like most is my bedroom. I love the feeling when I lie back in my warm bed after a long working-hard day. The atmosphere around my house is quiet and fresh, that helps me in studying very much.
There are three people in my family, my grandma, my sister and me. When I was a little baby, my parents had my grandma take care of me and I have lived with her until now. For me, home is a place where has most find serenity, a sense of belongingness, feeling of comfort and relaxation. I am nothing without my home, I think home is the solid foundations to help me fly further and get more successful in life.
There is No Place like Home
Homelessness results from the downward spiral of extreme poverty. Poverty is defined as, ‘being an illness, an accident, or a paycheck away from living on the streets’ (Camillius House). Close to 1. 5 million people are currently homeless in the United States and that number is expected to jump by 866,000 people experiencing homelessness during the next two years as a result of the recession (National Alliance). There are a number of causes for homelessness such as, poverty, lack of jobs, decline in public assistance and affordable healthcare, abuse, mental illness and drugs or alcohol.
When forced to choose between food, medical care, child care and housing, most often housing is the thing to go because it is the most expensive and the least necessary to immediate survival needs. What happens in the case of homelessness, however, is that once you become homeless it can be a long road to get back on your feet. It is difficult to get a job without a residence. It is also difficult to get a job without proper hygiene and without easy access to bathrooms or laundry it is hard to maintain appearance.
Without adequate shelter a person is also more susceptible to disease and prone to becoming ill because their bodies are run down from exposure to the elements. When they get ill they need to seek medical care because they can’t work if they are sick. The cost of healthcare furthers their struggle to find shelter. If mental illness is a reason for homelessness, the experience of being without a home can create stress that makes dealing with an illness more difficult. Also if a mentally ill individual doesn’t have access to medication or therapy when needed then their hopes or chances of getting off of the street become very small.
Decline in public assistance also becomes an issue once homeless because the system is so overrun with people that it often takes weeks just to be seen by a doctor or to get treatment for mental health or even to get through a waiting list for temporary shelter. The issue of homelessness is so challenging because the resources aren’t readily available to assist those in need and the obstacles are so challenging that people often just get stuck in a cycle unable to ever get back out.
The current recession is going to make it much worse because the numbers of people in extreme poverty will increase making it more likely to add to the homeless count and once these people become homeless there will be less and less resources available to assist them in their time of need.

Vahan, the main character in Forgotten Fire, written by Adam Bagdasarian, perspective on home changes a lot during the book. In the beginning of the book Vahan is a wealthy, soft, and spoiled kid. As industrialisation advanced, many people left their villages to make it big in cities. Their grit, determination and tenacity won them great fortunes. But they could never forget the ease and relaxation they experienced back home. John Howard Payne voiced the feelings of such adventurers when he penned his famous lines:
Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home; A charm from the skies seems to hallow us there, Which seen through the world, is never met with elsewhere. Home, house, sweet, sweet home; There is no place like home!
Students have a taste of life outside home when they have to stay in a hostel for studies. After long hours of lectures and practicals, when they return to their rooms in the hostel they feel disgusted with the shape of their room and lives.
They find things lying helter-skelter. Being tired, they have little inclination to do things up. They have to rush to the dining hall to be in time for the lunch. The mess waiter will not wait for them after lunch hours and they have to go without food boarders, therefore, long for weekends and vacations to rush to their homes to savor the warmth of a mother, protection of a father and affections of a brother or a sister.
The absence of home is felt strongly by a youngman or woman who takes up his first job in a place far away his home town. He has to part with a substantial part of his salary to live in some congested area of the town in a dingy home. The best part of his morning and evening time is spent in shuttling between his residence and restaurant work he can hardly rest or relax.
He has to make provisions for the next morning; otherwise he may have to walk a mile for his morning cup of tea. Isolated from the securities and certainties of home, many a youngman finds the world an inhospitable and dreary place to live in.
Some youngmen, particularly the teenagers, find the discipline and constraints of home unpleasant they denigrate the attitude of their parents who impose undue restrictions on them for observing timing in returning home in the evening or at nights. They feel that the parents don’t consider them grown-up and responsible to take care of them.
They resent the constraints and wish they were free from these restrictions. Many of them look forward to going to hostels. But a brief sojourn in the hostel shatters their mistaken beliefs. They are apalled by the impersonal attitude of hostel warden and totally disinterested and sometimes even mocking attitude of the mess employees.
The beloved of the parents is just another boy for the warden. The apple of his parents’ eyes is a disturbing sight for the warden. The latter believes that the less he sees of a boarder the better it is for his peace of mind as the boarder would not see his warden but with a problem.
Nobody gives him natural affections and unsolicited assistance as his brother and sister would give him at home. Rather, he would get insulting remarks and hostile reactions from his hostel mates if he asks them for a favour. The hardships of hostel life make the constraints of home-life mere pin-pricks.
Living away from home is a severe drain on the meagre resources of persons belonging to lower-middle class. Even for the well to do, who can spare money to buy good food or rent reasonable accommodation away from home, living away from parents and brothers and sisters can be a harrowing experience.
A minor illness or an accident makes one badly home sick. A doctor can give medicine and a nurse would care for you mechanically, but a sick man needs the assurance of a father and loving care of a mother to be at peace with him in a state of illness. Rabindranath Tagore in his famous story “The Home Coming” has powerfully brought out the homesickness of a teenage-boy Phatak Chakraborty.
The boy is starved of parents’ affection. He falls ill and gets delirious. He cries for his mother. Before falling ill, he has been waiting for holidays. In his delirium, at the height of his illness, he has hallucination that holidays have come. In this condition, he breathes his last. For sensitive souls, living away from home is nothing short of an ordeal.
If you really want to know the excitement of going to home, you should travel in trains leaving Punjab for U.P. and Bihar at the conclusion of harvesting season. In second Class compartments you would meet a large number of labourers bound for their home towns.
They would incessantly chatter among themselves, hum tunes of folk songs and talk about their children and relations and the relaxed atmosphere of their homes. They leave home only to earn money by the sweat of their brow so that they can bring happiness to their homes.
Travel is fun and excitement, seeing unfamiliar signs refreshes the minds. Eating food at restaurants is a good change. Spending a couple of days with relatives is quite enjoyable.
Facing minor inconveniences of journey in sun and rain can be taken as adventures of sorts. Such experiences break the monotone of home-life. They invigorate the mind and tickle the imagination. But after a week or two, the excitement of novelty wears off.
One longs to go back to the familiar surroundings and quiet certainties of home-life. There is a limit to one’s capacity to adjust to new surroundings and acquaintances. One wants to settle down to the leisurely routine of a settled home- life. Truly, there is no place like home, sweet home.

“There’s no place like home”
Home is a word that we are all familiar with and that we use on a regular basis. It is something that is personalized and different from person to person. We may be able to agree on a general definition of what a home is, because it is defined in the dictionary. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary home is “one’s place of residence”. Ones place of residence could be anything from a bustling, busy city with heavy air pollution and a seemingly constant scream of sirens or it might be the quiet calm rows of suburbia, with green lawns, swing sets and blue skies. But a commonality that we all hold is the proverb: “there is no place like home”. The definition of home is something that is personalized to each individual. We all have variations of what we believe home to be. Personally, I have learned to hold 3 definitions of home. The first being where my residence is, the second: where my family is and the third: “home is where the heart is.
Having moved back and forth between countries, I have always been able to say that home has always been somewhere stationary at all times. It may have been a hotel for extended periods of time, but eventually it turned into apartments and then houses. It never really mattered where in the world I was, but as long as there was somewhere that I would be staying for the night and would be spending some time at, I considered that to be my home. An example of a place that isn’t exactly where I reside, but will always be my home, is my family home in Austria. I was born in Austria, and I have grown up visiting our home and family living in Austria, but I have never actually lived there. Which is what leads me to my second point of home being where my family is.
Austria is where my grandmother, aunt and cousin live. No matter where I have lived before, regardless of distance, I have always been able to visit them and return ‘home’. It is a place that has been my home since I was born, it is the first place I was brought after the hospital and as I grew up certain things have never changed. Walking through a large wooden door, carved by my grandfather into a narrow tiled hallway, taking in the smell of freshly burning wood in the fire place, the more progress you make down the hallway the air and smells change, from the welcoming burning wood and cool air to the smell of freshly baked bread and the warmth of the kitchen, where my grandmother always waited with some treats for my brother and I to indulge in after our long trip home. This is the scene that always welcomed us home to Austria to my grandmother and to my family. On a smaller scale, the apartment that my parents live in, in downtown Chicago is also a place that I call home. I go there over school holidays and it is where my immediate family is. Home is where my family is regardless of if it is immediate family or extended family. A bit later in my life, my view of home once again evolved into something else, a third definition.
My third definition of home can be seen as another proverb in some sense, “home is where the heart is”. To me this means that where ever I have felt to be the most comfortable and the place that I love unconditionally and would love to go to at any time, this place is in Switzerland, this place is my so called ‘hometown’, this place is Zurich. Once again the word home is brought up in the word ‘hometown’, I never really used this phrase until here and hearing people at UIUC ask me where my ‘hometown’ is. Which made me really think, where and what exactly is my ‘hometown’. And no matter what I always came to the same conclusion of Zurich. I essentially grew up in Zurich and never really grew to appreciate or label it as my home until it came time to move to Illinois. I remember my last week in Switzerland, most of my friends had already left for schools all across the globe, and it was just me and my best friend left. We spent the whole night just talking and reminiscing about our time in Zurich, how much we would miss it and what we would no longer be able to do once we left, and even if we would be able to come back any time soon. Not realizing the time, light began to peek out from behind the highest mountain tops and the tell tale colors of sunrise began to show, and birds began to chirp their morning songs, so we made our way outside onto the terrace to watch our final Swiss sunrise. The slow rise of the sun over the mountain tops, creeping out and shining onto the lake, making the water shimmer with hundreds of tiny lights and the glow of reds, oranges and even a few purples made everything seem like a watercolor painting. That image is what I refer back to when I need a little pick me up or if I ever feel home sick. I know that one day I will go back home to where everything comes to life with the opening chords of songbirds and the light of day shining bright from behind the mountains.
Home. That is where we feel safe, comfortable and at peace. It can be anywhere in the world, or anything in the world, it can be a city, town, house, dorm, hotel room, or cardboard box, if that is where you are most comfortable and feel at home, then so be it. I have multiple definitions of home, which can be confusing at times when people ask me “are you going home?”, but knowing that I have a variety of places I feel are my homes is comforting. I have an actual residence, anywhere my family is and a city that I consider my homes. It is a concept that is so broad and abstract that anyone can take it and make it their own, but something that stands for everyone is that there really is no place like home.
