19 of the Best YouTube Channels for Writers

by Kelly Gurnett | Feb 8, 2021

woman vlogging at her desk for youtube

We write a lot about the best websites for writers , online writing courses , books on writing and lots more for writers of all kinds, but there’s a whole ‘nother realm of resources out there.

I’m talking about YouTube channels.

You may currently know YouTube only as that place you go to watch far too many cute animal videos rather than facing your writer’s block. (No judgment from me; have you seen the one with the tiny hedgehog birthday party?!)

Looking for writers on YouTube? Here are 20 channels to check out

YouTube also contains a wealth of useful advice on everything from novel writing to marketing your work , and you’d be remiss if you didn’t tap into it.

I’ll make you a deal: For every animal video you watch, watch just one of the videos from the 20 awesome YouTube writing channels below.

1. Self-Publishing School

Chandler Bolt’s Self-Publishing School channel aims to teach new writers how to publish and become bestsellers in their genres. It has a wide variety of topics like fiction writing tips, marketing strategies for authors, business building, writing prompts, book ideas, writing software, book cover design tips… You’ll be bombarded with hours and hours of content. Don’t forget to check out their podcast in there!

We recommend: How To Write A Book for Beginners: 21 Simple Steps To Published Author

2. Hannah Lee Kidder

Hannah Lee Kidder is an indie fiction writer, consultant, and YouTuber. She covers the craft of writing, self-publishing, and building your own career. Hannah finds engaging and entertaining ways to teach writing, like with her most popular series where she rewrites the Twilight series , pointing out pitfalls newbie writers can learn from (and giving much-needed attention to neglected characters— give Charlie a dishwasher !).

She has two heart-jerking short story collections currently available on Amazon, and is working on a fantasy duology she’ll self-publish as well! Follow along if you love witty humor, straight-to-the-point writing advice without the fluff, and videos that turn the “darker” side of being an author into light-hearted fun.

Be sure to check out: my favorite reason people HATE my book

3. The Creative Penn

From The New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Joanna Penn (who runs the writing website of the same name ), this popular YouTube channel provides tips on self-publishing, marketing, the business of being a writer and more.

Penn and other successful writers draw from their own experiences and life lessons to teach you everything you need to know to turn your writing dreams into reality. If you need tips on how to improve your craft, posts like Writing In The Dark. Horror Writing Tips With Tim Waggoner shows she’s got you covered there, too.

4. Katytastic

Book reviewer and aspiring author Kat O’Keefe’s YouTube channel is chock full of writing videos with everything from micro advice like word choices to macro advice like world-building.

Her upbeat personality and sense of humor make every lesson feel fun, so it’ll be easy to learn from the wisdom she shares about her own unique writing process.

If you’re a NaNoWriMo participant, she’s got a few playlists geared towards how to survive (and win) that challenge. The videos are older now, but they still offer tons of value.

Be sure to check out: How I Write a Rough Draft

5. Vivien Reis

This YA sci-fi writer, whose debut novel “The Elysian Prophecy” was published in 2018, is a great resource for newbie novel writers trying to make sense of the whole overwhelming process.

Her videos discuss challenges like how to divide your story into chapters, how to choose the right editor and how to find beta readers. Her down-to-earth, imperfections-included style ( hello, intruding dogs ! ) make you feel like you’re video chatting with a friend.

7. Rachael Stephen

Scottish novelist and self-described “hellbitch,” Stephen is funny, quirky and offers non-filtered advice that’s a lovely combination of frank and empathetic. Plus, her tips are super-useful (see her The Plot Embryo playlist for tips that make a big, scary process seem entirely doable).

She’s kind of like that accountability buddy who nods understandingly when you talk about the trouble you’re having with writer’s block, then delivers the tail-kicking you need to get moving again.

8. Robert McKee

Screenwriting guru and “story doctor” McKee’s former students include Academy Award Winners, Emmy Award Winners and Writers of Guild of America Winners numbering in the hundreds (nominees number in the thousands).

His renowned seminars on the art of storytelling were even portrayed in the film “Adaptation.” But you don’t need to be a screenwriter to learn from him; his advice on story structure and design applies to literature, too.

As bestseller Steven Pressfield has said, “McKee is not only the best teacher of writing I’ve ever had, but the best teacher of anything.”

Don’t just visit McKee’s own YouTube channel, but also browse the plethora of great videos featuring him on other channels to get the most from his wisdom.

Dawson and others talk about things like running an indie author business, the cost of self-publishing and whether you should write a sequel or series, all with an approachable, refreshing genuineness that reminds us successful authors really are just like us.

12. ShaelinWrites

Her videos are casual and don’t feel scripted; they’re also a bit on the long side (averaging 10-25 minutes while other vloggers’ are closer to 5-10). But writers of all ages will appreciate her candor and realness, whether she’s discussing her outlining process or flipping out over getting her first physical copy of her book .

20. Overly Sarcastic Productions

Learning is fun — especially when you’re learning about classic and not-so-classic myths and literature and major historical events through engaging animated videos. Oh, and the sarcastic part? That’s the tone of the videos you can expect.

While informative and easy-to-follow, this YouTube channel can get pretty gory, as it depicts violence, assault, murder and NSFW language in its lessons. In fact, it warns: “Treat us as a TV-14 show and don’t show us to your kids.” However, if you’re a writer interested in the right way to depict history and myths, this channel is worth hiding out in a closet to watch it.

Top 25 YouTube Channels For Creative Writers | Web Design Relief

Updated 11/19/21

An online video platform with over two billion users each month, YouTube has become one of the most powerful information tools available today. Whether you’re looking for instructional videos, entertainment, or philosophy, there are videos posted on YouTube channels for every subject—and that includes writing advice! As always, the Internet experts at Web Design Relief have done the research for you and come up with the 25 best YouTube channels for creative writers to guide, accompany, and inspire your writing.

Must-Watch YouTube Channels For Creative Writers

Short youtube videos for writers (<10 minutes).

Perfect for the writer on the go, these bite-sized, ten-minutes-or-under videos offer pearls of wisdom without any extra padding to get in the way. Watch these short videos when you have some downtime throughout your day, and you’ll be brimming with creativity when you’re ready to write!

Terrible Writing Advice. This channel is exactly what it says: terrible advice to ruin your stories. Sci-fi author J.P. Beaubien sarcastically endorses all the most common pitfalls of writing to give you a clear idea of what NOT to do.

Tyler Mowery. Mowery is the creator of PracticalScreenwriting.com, and his videos dissect the characters and structure of film and television media. However, his focus on narrative structures and devices allows any writer—not just screenwriters—to take advantage of his intelligent insight.

Ellen Brock. As a freelance novel editor, Brock offers valuable advice about how to edit your stories and what sorts of writing errors editors often see. She aims to help you make your book both narratively successful and professionally appealing. Brock has been inactive recently, but she has an impressive eight-year backlog of helpful videos.

Vivien Reis. Reis’s career as a young adult fantasy author is just starting, so she has a lot of useful insight for beginning writers. She occasionally shares writing techniques, but she focuses more on the writing process—from organizing your ideas to changing your lifestyle to support your writing.

Self-Publishing with Dale. Self-published bestselling author Dale L. Roberts shares his insight into the self-publishing industry to help new writers understand the do-it-yourself process. He offers his fair share of useful advice, but his best videos simply break down the terms and systems you’ll be expected to know about when you start self-publishing.

Jorden Makelle. Founder of Writing Revolt, Makelle is a very successful freelance writer, and she wants to share that success with as many writers as possible. Her videos focus on the business of freelancing and how she was able to turn her writing into a business that brought in $5,000 per month.

Chris Fox. Fox is now a well-established science fiction and fantasy author, and he creates videos about any and every part of his writing process. His hefty backlog covers a variety of topics from writing techniques to editing, marketing, and mindset.

Bookishpixie. Young adult author Gabe Cole Novoa shares his experience breaking into publishing. His videos mainly cover the writer lifestyle, from managing burnout to setting expectations for success, as well as advice about plotting and publishing.

Mid-Length YouTube Videos For Writers (About 20 Minutes)

When you have a little more time on your hands, these YouTube channels will offer you more context along with the advice. These videos are perfect for enriching your lunch break or providing a buffer between when you finish a draft and start editing.

Overly Sarcastic Productions. This channel covers a range of historic topics, especially relating to ancient mythologies. The systematic breakdown of how these iconic stories developed over time is useful both as inspiration and as a guideline for organic world building. Plus, it’s pretty interesting! They also have a series called Trope Talk that gives the same treatment to common story tropes.

Lessons from the Screenplay. While clearly focused on film, Michael Tucker’s channel provides detailed analysis of the narrative elements that drive some of the most successful stories of the modern age. These elements are easily adapted to any kind of writing, and Tucker’s analysis is deep enough to provide a full, versatile understanding of the subject.

Cinema Therapy. Therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright team up to psychoanalyze what’s going on with your favorite movie characters beyond what you see on the screen. Their videos are excellent studies in character depth and development as well as the evolution of character arcs, and they also have a few life lessons to share.

Merphy Napier. While she is a writer herself, Napier endeavors to share the reader perspective behind what makes a good book. In her Dear Authors series (which recently concluded but is still available to watch), Napier discusses the different techniques authors use and how readers really feel about them. After all, the best-constructed book in the world won’t sell if the readers don’t enjoy it!

Writing with Jenna Moreci. With videos on everything from writing tips to the writing lifestyle, Moreci is quick to tell you what you’re doing wrong and quicker to tell you how to fix it. As a dark fantasy writer, she speaks from her own experience in the industry, and with her punchy enthusiasm and reliable posting schedule, she is consistently ranked one of the top writers on YouTube.

Abbie Emmons. One of the most consistent YouTube writers, Emmons looks at the science and psychology behind storytelling in order to better understand the craft. She encourages studying successful books you love and trying to understand the elements that make them work in an effort to “Make Your Story Matter.”

ShaelinWrites. Remarkably young for her level of success, twenty-two-year-old Shaelin Bishop has written ten novels and is now sharing some of her advice. The topics of her videos range broadly, but she offers great advice about writing, editing, and balancing a writing lifestyle.

Grammar Girl. Better known for her podcast of the same name, New York Times bestselling author Mignon Fogarty uses her YouTube channel to clear up some of the many confusing aspects of grammar and the English language. If you’re unfamiliar with her podcast, you’ll find episodes archived on her channel.

Long YouTube Videos For Writers (>40 Minutes)

If you want to really sink your teeth in and learn about the craft, these YouTube channels produce in-depth videos that get to the heart of their subject matter.

Alexa Donne. Donne is a young adult thriller author soon to be releasing her fourth book. Her channel maintains a balance between helpful writing advice and dealing with the hard truths of the writing industry. Donne wants to help you succeed, but she won’t let you trick yourself into thinking it’ll be easy!

Creative Penn. Dark fiction writer Joanna Penn has made a long career of teaching other writers how to write successfully. Her videos discuss writing as a craft, as well as self-publishing and the business of writing. She also habitually features guest authors to ensure that her content is useful to any writer, no matter the genre.

Tamara Woods. Rather than instruct you on how to write, Woods helps you make use of the best writing teacher there is: practice. On her channel, Woods hosts long write-along streams and posts peaceful soundscapes to encourage you to get writing and help you hit your flow.

Variable-Length YouTube Videos For Writers

These channels create videos of many different lengths: Some of them create different series with different standard runtimes, while others simply record as long as they need to in order to convey their ideas. Either way, these channels create videos that are well worth your time.

Hello Future Me. Timothy Hickson is an expert on world building—specifically for sci-fi and fantasy. In his videos, he explains all kinds of successful world-building techniques and makes them accessible by basing his explanations in relevant pop culture media.

Brandon Sanderson. Sanderson is one of the most prolific fantasy authors working today. His shorter videos offer snippets of advice about the writing craft, and he also posts longer recordings of his creative writing lectures at BYU.

iWriterly. Meg LaTorre may be a novice author, but she has a wealth of insider knowledge from her time spent working at a literary agency. She shares her insights on craft topics, but mostly she explores the nature of publishing, both traditional and independent.

Self-Publishing Formula. USA Today bestselling author Mark Dawson explores every aspect of self-publishing and how you as a writer can make it work for you. He posts hour-long dives into specific topics, such as royalties or translations, as well as five-minute excerpts from his longer seminars.

WordNerds. With seven creators producing content, this channel has a little bit of everything, from book reviews to discussions of voice in narrative. You can follow your favorite “Word Nerd” or check out everything the channel has to offer!

ProWritingAidTV. ProWritingAid is an in-browser grammar-checker, but their YouTube channel wants to help your grammar evolve permanently. Along with videos on how best to use their program, ProWritingAid posts videos about how to use nuanced grammar structures and how to write professionally in a business setting.

And be sure to check out the Writer’s Relief YouTube channel for writing tips, advice, and more!

While the craft of writing hasn't gotten any easier for writers over time, the methods and avenues for learning and practicing writing skills have expanded in so many ways. Take a look at my list of more than ten top writing YouTube channels to see which one holds the best writing tips for your creative writing growth.

Top Ten Writing YouTube Channels

YouTube: Where Writers Go to Learn

The other day, as I was pilfering through a closet, I came across the first novel I ever wrote. Picking up the yellowed manuscript, I cracked it open. The handwritten words looped across the college ruled notebook paper. Red ink crowded the margins and whiteout chipped off some of the lines.

So much has changed in the decades since I penned my first tale. Not only what I write on, but how I prepare for the next leg of my writing journey.

There are so many sources of amazing information available on a variety of media. So many, in fact, it can feel overwhelming.

How do you know where to start? How do you know if the book, blog, podcast or YouTube channel is worth your time?

The world of writer YouTube channels has a name: authortube. There’s a wealth of channels with thousands of videos. Some focus on the writing craft, the nuts and bolts of writing. Others on self-publishing and the business of being a writer.

Fortunately for you, I’ve done the research, and found the top ten Youtube channels for writers. These channels are from authors, editors and entrepreneurs who are currently publishing videos on a regular basis to provide you with ongoing and up-to-date advice.

Top 10 Writing YouTube Channels

Check out these writing channels to give your writing a boost:

1. The Creative Penn

The Creative Penn from New York Times best-selling author, Joanna Penn, covers a wide variety of topics. She offers tips on self publishing, marketing, and being a successful author.

While she is known for her thrillers, Joanna often collaborates with guest writers who provide advice on fiction, memoirs and nonfiction. You can find her posts weekly.

2. Mark Dawson

Mark is a prolific best selling indie author with over forty novels. His website and authortube channel, The Self Publishing Formula, offers tutorials and collaborations with other successful authors who use social media advertising to supercharge their careers.

Mark publishes videos weekly each with a new topic on the path to being a successful indie writer.

3. BooksandBigHair

India Hill Brown, author of The Forgotten Girl and The Drowned Girl, leads this booktube channel where she provides book reviews, unboxing and read-a-thons.

She also has videos offering advice on how to land a literary agent and how to set and accomplish your writing goals. India uses her own experiences as a writer and a mother to help influence her content.

4. Jenna Moreci

Jenna won over a huge fan base by offering her sarcastic, comedic writing advice in bite size pieces on her YouTube channel . She is a successful indie writer with thousands of short videos serving up writing do’s and don’ts; like How do I Write My First Chapter or Why Your Plot Twist Sucks.

This is not your mama’s Youtube channel, and I suggest you don’t let your kids watch either. But her wit and humor keep you coming back for some great tips and laughs. Jenna puts out new videos weekly.

5. Michael La Ronn

Michael heads up a channel called Author Level Up . Each week he posts videos about the writing craft, self-publishing and increasing your productivity. He offers livestream Q&A sessions as well so you can interact directly with Michael. Learn to write better and faster all while having fun.

6. Dave Chesson

Dave’s channel, Kindlepreneur, provides a series of short, easily digestible videos on increasing your notoriety as well as some great `”how to’s” on a variety of publishing topics like uploading your book to Amazon, writing a prologue, and book formatting.

Dave’s strength is moving books to readers. His website, kindlepreneur.com , is a book marketing website. Dave is also the founder of Publisher Rocket, a book marketing software. (See The Write Practice's review on Pub Rocket here .) Dave publishes videos weekly, so you can always be informed on the most up to date trends in the publishing industry.

These YouTube channels are sure to teach you something new. (Image via PixaBay)

Screens x june 27, 2019, 4 youtube channels all creative writing and film students should know, learn from the small screen of your computer so you can excel on the silver screen of the movie theatre., by rocco romano, university of iowa.

YouTube offers millions of different kinds of videos appropriate for anyone who wants to know how to perform a certain task, watch news bloopers or see a particular clip of their favorite movie. Given YouTube’s vast selection, it’s no small wonder that the video-sharing website also has video essays loaded with not only analyses of films and books but also writing tips for English or film students.

Students of the arts can look no further than these four YouTube channels offering the best video-essays ripe for the note-taking.

Please enable JavaScript

1. Nerdwriter1

Going beyond just film, YouTube channel Nerdwriter1 analyzes a wide range of the arts, including paintings, poems, songs, political figures and celebrities. If a video is about a movie, Nerdwriter1 dives deep into other aspects of a film that viewers might not have even thought to analyze. In one video, the channel examines a perhaps overlooked component of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy: how Ian McKellen acts with his eyes.

How Ian McKellen Acts With His Eyes

Nerdwriter1 begins his analysis by defining what acting is, saying, “Acting is more than just putting yourself in the character’s shoes.” When considering acting as a craft, he describes it as “understanding and gaining control of involuntary human actions when they communicate, such as inflection of the voice, gestures of the body and facial expressions.”

Because Ian McKellen is playing such an important role as Gandalf, the YouTuber explains how his duty is to convey a large amount of story information to the audience, who naturally gravitate to his face when he is on screen; Nerdwriter1 points out that eyes are an efficient way of conveying a story to the audience, noting that there are two levels of exposition: the information and the character’s reaction to the information.

English and film students can apply the lesson easily: show, don’t tell, and even the smallest detail can communicate the gravity of a situation or story’s theme.

2. Lessons from the Screenplay

Lessons from the Screenplay (LFTS) is a YouTube channel dealing exclusively with the analysis of films and TV shows, giving lessons predominantly aimed at screenwriters. However, writers of all types or genres can gain beneficial storytelling advice, even if they have no intention of writing a screenplay.

Like the other YouTube channels on the list, LFTS uses books about writing and other subjects as resources which aid in his analysis and supplements his writing advice. The best video demonstrating the use of outside information is titled, “Inglourious Basterds – The Elements of Suspense.”

Inglourious Basterds — The Elements of Suspense

In the video, LFST analyzes the film’s opening scene; as a resource, he draws from a paper titled “ Toward a General Psychological Model of Tension and Suspense ” by Moritz Lehne and Stefan Koelsch to explain how Tarantino builds tension and suspense in the scene.

From the scholarly paper, LFTS differentiates between tension and suspense, with tension being a “diffuse, general state of anticipation” and suspense being “specific anticipation between clearly exposed outcomes.”

With the terms defined, LFTS incorporates interview clips of Tarantino and Alfred Hitchcock discussing how they evoke tension in their films, with Tarantino describing it like stretching a rubber band, while Hitchcock compares it to a ticking time-bomb.

Based on the interviews, LFTS concludes with a lesson in writing tension when he says, “There must always be a payoff or a release from the tension in order to reacquaint the audience with another tense moment.” Writers can use the first 20 minutes of “Inglourious Basterds” as a guide to help build tension and suspense in their own writing, regardless of whether they’re writing a screenplay or a novel.

3. Justwrite

Justwrite is another YouTube channel which, unlike Nerdwriter1 and LFTS, deals less with analysis and more with teaching about specific writing techniques. The best video Justwrite has created is titled “Writing Characters Without Character Arcs,” where he explains how films can work even if the protagonist doesn’t undergo any significant personal development.

Writing Characters Without Character Arcs

He notes how the film “ Paddington 2 ” received critical acclaim despite Paddington not having a character arc, demonstrating that some films are better because their characters remain consistent. Other kinds of characters, particularly politically-minded or rebellious characters — think Katniss Everdeen in the “ Hunger Games ” or Maximus in “ Gladiator ” — are not subject to the trope of the typical character arc either.

The video draws from K.M Weiland ’s book “ Creating Character Arcs ,” which discussed three different types of character journeys — the positive change, negative change and the flat arc.

This video, like many others on the channel, teaches a valuable lesson to writers of all genres and mediums about how to effectively craft a character and their journey in light of the world around them.

4. The Take (formerly known as Screenprism)

Unlike Justwrite, The Take focuses on film analysis rather than giving explicit writing tips. Still, students can extract enough information from the channel’s use of specific movie moments to help in their writing endeavors.

According to the creators themselves, their former title, Screenprism, “captured the idea of how something we watched can support so many interpretations and meanings.” Their rebranding of the channel into The Take reflects a desire to expand their horizons, offering up their opinions on other mediums outside the screen with games, music and books.

A video showing the extent of the creator’s analysis of films is “ Bird Box & A Quiet Place: The Horrors of Modern Parenting ,” wherein the creators highlight key dialogue or imagery that symbolizes the trials of parenthood as clips from the films play.

Bird Box & A Quiet Place: The Horrors of Modern Parenting

The Take uses interview clips of John Krasinski (director of “ A Quiet Place ”) and Sandra Bullock (the protagonist of “ Bird Box ”) explaining how their films are all allegories of the danger of parenting in a hostile world. Through Bullock’s and Emily Blunt ’s (“A Quiet Place’) portrayal of mothers, the channel argues the role of a mother brings out strengths they didn’t know they had and, in the process, creates two different types of mother figures.

One type is the “tiger mom,” reflected in Bullock’s character, who is strict and hard on their children so they can survive an even crueler world. The other, Blunt, is a loving, caring mother who attends to their children’s development and ability to not only survive, but thrive, in a harsh world.

This channel exposes certain themes or elements that others might not notice at first glance, giving writers a better understanding of the importance of subtlety when crafting their work.

Our 13 Favorite YouTube Channels for Writers

youtubechannels1

The best part of being a writer in the 21st century is free access to countless resources! YouTube has so many great channels for writers. It’s like getting your own personal writing tutor from the comfort of your couch.

We’ve rounded up some of the best YouTube channels for writers. These channels are full of invaluable information and inspiration.

1. ProWritingTV

2. shaelinwrites, 3. iwriterly, 4. brandon sanderson, 5. terrible writing advice, 6. mark dawson’s self-publishing formula, 7. grammar girl, 8. the creative penn, 9. jorden makelle, 10. writing with jenna moreci, 11. alexa donne, 12. self-publishing with dale, 13. book launchers.

We are definitely biased, but our favorite YouTube channel for writers is our own. Here at ProWritingAid, our goal isn't just to create an amazing grammar checker that will help you find and fix errors in your work. We also want to help you learn from your mistakes to improve your writing and your understanding of your writing every single day.

That's why we launched our YouTube channel, ProWritingTV: to give you even more ways and mediums in which you can learn about the craft of writing. Whether you're a visual learner who prefers to watch a video than read an article or you're just looking for a more educational bingewatch topic than normal, head over to ProWritingTV now to check out our frequently updated content.

We also have replays of all our free writing webinars, where you can learn from bestselling authors like Jerry Jenkins, Orna Ross, and more.

Shaelin Bishop is such an inspirational writer and vlogger. She’s very young, but she’s already written more than eight novels! Her videos are chock full of great information on topics ranging from plot to point-of-view. They are longer than many AuthorTube videos, which just means they are detailed and leave nothing out.

Shaelin started her channel while she was still in school for creative writing, and she recently graduated. That means her information is fresh and up-to-date. She talks about things she has learned from her professors, so it’s like you get several experts in one YouTube channel.

This is one of our favorites:

Next up, we have iWriterly, the brainchild of author Meg LaTorre. Meg’s videos cover a wide range of topics. She delves into craft topics like tropes and characterization, but she also has great advice for both traditional and indie publishing. She covers everything from querying literary agents to finding a cover artist for self-published authors.

Meg worked at a literary agency before she branched out on her own as an author, blogger, and speaker. That means she has valuable insider information to the world of traditional publishing. Her videos are professional quality, and she keeps it real about the good and the bad sides of publishing.

Here is one of our favorites:

At this point in my writing career, I’m convinced Brandon Sanderson has more fans from his author content than from his actual books. Brandon is one of the top-selling fantasy authors. He’s also dedicated to the writing community and shares information on his own website and his podcast, Writing Excuses.

But he also was a guest lecturer at Brigham Young University. On his channel, you can find all thirteen of his lectures. And let me tell you, he’s the coolest professor you’ll ever have. This is a must-view channel for fantasy authors.

Terrible Writing Advice is exactly what it sounds like. Everything the vlogger tells you to do is something you really shouldn’t. So, why am I calling this one of the best YouTube channels for writers? Well, it’s actually a lot more helpful than a lot of writing advice. Plus, the videos are a lot of fun: animated and full of sarcasm.

It’s easy to listen to regular writing advice and think: Sensory description? Check. Character motivations? Check. But it’s a lot harder to find the mistakes. So, if a piece of Terrible Writing Advice sounds like something you did in your novel, chances are you, you might want to rewrite it. (I’m looking at myself here, when it comes to fantasy battles!)

One of our favorites is:

If you are planning on self-publishing and you haven’t heard of Mark Dawson, you can thank me later. Mark is a highly successful indie author who has turned his expertise into the business of helping other self-published authors find success.

You can find everything on his channel from formatting your book to earning a six-figure income. And he doesn’t rely only on his knowledge. He regularly interviews other independent authors to share their experiences and expertise.

Grammar is the bane of many writers’ lives. It’s great to have editing software like ProWritingAid, but have you ever wondered why you keep making the same mistakes? Grammar Girl provides an easy-to-understand explanation of different spelling and grammar rules.

I’ve loved Grammar Girl’s website and podcast for a long time, so I was thrilled to discover that she has a YouTube channel. She updates regularly, and her videos are often very timely, like her recent explanation of the difference between a “pandemic” and an “epidemic.”

No list of AuthorTube channels would be complete without mentioning The Creative Penn. Joanna Penn has built a small empire teaching other writers about writing craft, book marketing, and self-publishing. When I’m looking for a specific question, Joanna’s website and channel are the first places I look.

She has videos on every topic you could imagine. And she isn’t just for fiction writers, either. Joanna also brings on other authorpreneurs to share their stories and advice.

We’ve talked a lot about YouTube channels meant for fiction writers. But writing books isn’t the only type of writing out there. Jordan Makelle, the founder of Creative Revolt, is a freelance writing guru.

She started her freelance career as a complete novice and was earning $5,000 a month within just four months. She now teaches courses for bloggers and freelance writers. But she gives out plenty of great, free advice on her channel. Fair warning, if you don’t want your kids to pick up an swear words, watch her videos with headphones.

There’s a reason Jenna Moreci is one of the top authors on YouTube. Her videos are hilarious and informative at the same time. She has over 200 videos on tons of subjects.

Jenna mostly focuses on craft discussion and writing tips. However, she also talks about the business of being a writer, too. She also makes her share of videos about the life of an author, like finding motivation to write and dealing with haters.

Everyone needs a writer friend that will tell you the stuff you need to hear but don’t want to hear while also being super supportive. But if you don’t have that friend, Alexa Donne’s YouTube channel is the next best thing. Alexa has a personality that makes you feel like you’ve known her your whole life.

She gives great writing advice and can be brutally honest about the writing community and its trends. But she is also encouraging and gives great pep talks. I find her videos some of the most engaging on the internet.

Dale L. Roberts is a best-selling author and self-publishing advocate. He wants to show you how to build a successful writing career through self-publishing. On his YouTube channel, Dale covers everything from how to find the best keywords for your book to whether or not you should hire a narrator to do your book's voiceover.

Julie Broad is the founder of Book Launchers , a self-publishing service that helps authors get thier book out there.

She is also an Amazon Overall #1 Best Selling Author, so she knows what it takes to successfully self-publish a book. Her popular YouTube channel, BookLaunchers.TV, champions the hashtag #noboringbooks, and helps nonfiction authors write (and market!) books people want to read.
